except in the representation <strong>of</strong> the county in the State Legislature, on one<br />

or more occasions, he adhered to the maxim " The post <strong>of</strong> honor is the<br />

private station." He died on the 14.'-^ Feb. 1826, a few days before the<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> his eightieth year.'<br />

He married: first, in 1772, Sarah daughter <strong>of</strong> Dr. Zophar Piatt <strong>of</strong><br />

Huntington, L. I.; <strong>and</strong>, secondly, in 1786, Hannah Piatt sister <strong>of</strong> his first<br />

wife. Of Dr. Piatt it was remarked<br />

by a neighbour that it would be<br />

hard to say whether Dr. Piatt's medicine was more beneficial to the bodies<br />

<strong>of</strong> his patients than were his prayers to their souls.' " By these two mar-<br />
