Heathfield (or Hetfield, or Hatfield), who was one <strong>of</strong> the "Associates"<br />

under the Nicolls Patent, having come from New Haven, Conn., where<br />

he was Hving in 1660. Her great gr<strong>and</strong>father is supposed to have been a<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Hatfield <strong>of</strong> Leyden, a native <strong>of</strong> Yorkshire, <strong>and</strong> member<br />

<strong>of</strong> Robinson's church at Leyden.<br />

Robert <strong>and</strong> Phoebe (Hatfield) Ogden had thirteen children, beside<br />

one whose name has not been ascertained, as follows<br />

148 i. Phcebe^ (b. 1737); who married, in 1762, Col. Thomas Moseley,<br />

M.D., <strong>of</strong> East Haddam, Conn.<br />

149 ii. Anna^ (b. 1740) ;<br />

married, in 1757, Col. Oliver Spencer "<strong>of</strong><br />

Elizabeth <strong>and</strong> Ohio." Her husb<strong>and</strong> "'comm<strong>and</strong>ed a regiment in the<br />

battle <strong>of</strong> Princeton, <strong>and</strong> after the war was judge <strong>of</strong> probate in Ohio ;<br />

where he died Jan. 22, 1811.'""<br />

150 iii. Rhoda^ (b. 1742, d. 1822) ; who married, in 1760, Judge Timothy<br />

Edwards <strong>of</strong> Stockbridge, Mass., eldest son <strong>of</strong> the elder President Jonathan<br />

Edwards.<br />

The following extract from the "Autobiography" <strong>of</strong> a nephew <strong>of</strong><br />

hers, by marriage, sets this lady before us vividly :<br />

" ' In the summer <strong>of</strong> 1809, I met my cousin Aaron Burr at the house <strong>of</strong> our com-<br />

mon uncle Hon. Timothy Edwards in Stockbridge. . . . The<br />

day after Burr left<br />

our uncle's I called at the house to talk over the impressions on this unwonted visit.<br />

My aunt was a venerable <strong>and</strong> pious woman. ' I want to tell you, cousin,' said she,<br />

' the scene I passed through this morning. When Col. Burr's carriage had driven up<br />

to the door, I asked him to go with me into the north room, <strong>and</strong> I cannot tell you<br />

how anxious I felt, as I, an old woman, went through the hall with that great man<br />

Col. Burr, to admonish him, <strong>and</strong> to lead him to repentance. After we were by our-<br />

selves, I said to him :<br />
