"The first emigrant William Pitkin died on the 16*'' <strong>of</strong> December<br />

1694, aged fifty-nine; <strong>and</strong> though, for the greater part <strong>of</strong> his life, he had<br />

lived on the east side <strong>of</strong> the Connecticut river, he was buried in the burialground<br />

on the west side <strong>of</strong> that river. His wife survived him until Feb-<br />

ruary 1724, when she died at the age <strong>of</strong> eighty-six.<br />

"William [5] Pitkin, the second son <strong>of</strong> the first William, was educated<br />

by his father as a lawyer, <strong>and</strong> like him was distinguished in his pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />
