Judge <strong>of</strong> Probate, Judge <strong>and</strong> Chief Judge <strong>of</strong> the County Court, Repre-<br />

sentative in Congress <strong>and</strong> Judge <strong>of</strong> the Superior Court ;" <strong>and</strong> in a funeral-<br />

sermon preached on his decease in 1 793 ^ we read :<br />

" ' He<br />

possessed a strong <strong>and</strong> penetrating mind, a quick discernment <strong>and</strong> solid<br />

judgment, beyond what is common to men. And these gifts <strong>of</strong> the Universal Parent<br />

were united to great integrity.' "<br />

He was familiarly known as "Old Long-Head." In 1790 Yale<br />

College conferred on him the honorary degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Arts.<br />

Midway between the birth-years <strong>of</strong> Erastus <strong>and</strong> Oliver Wolcott,<br />

in 1724, was born the youngest daughter <strong>of</strong> Gov. Roger, his thirteenth<br />

52 child, Ursula ; ^ who married, November 10, 1 743, Gov. Matthew Griswold,<br />

her second cousin's son (see ^trf!SiU)Oltr)»<br />

By this marriage the descend-<br />

ants <strong>of</strong> Gov. Matthew Griswold became trebly Wolcotts, he himself<br />

having been a Wolcott by descent from Matthew <strong>and</strong> Anna (Wolcott)<br />

Griswold, <strong>and</strong> his wife having been a Wolcott on her mother's side, as<br />

stated above, as well as on her father's.<br />

Ohver (51) Wolcott, so named, it appears, for the great English<br />

Protector, was born in 1726, <strong>and</strong> graduated at Yale College in 1747. We<br />

abridge for our record a sketch <strong>of</strong> the principal particulars <strong>of</strong> his public<br />

life copied from family-documents.<br />

leaving College he received a commission as Captain in the<br />

Army, from Gov. George Clinton, <strong>and</strong> .<br />

. . marched<br />

to the defence<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Northern Frontiers,' " where he served till the peace <strong>of</strong> Aix-la-<br />

Chapelle. When the county <strong>of</strong> Litchfield was organized, in 1 751, he was<br />

appointed the first Sheriff, <strong>and</strong> he thenceforth made Litchfield his home,<br />

which town he represented in the General Assembly. From 1774 to<br />

1786 he was annually elected a Member <strong>of</strong> the Council, discharging, at<br />

the same time, the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Chief Judge <strong>of</strong> the Court <strong>of</strong> Common Pleas.<br />
