our Pedigree. We proceed, then, to the line <strong>of</strong> descent from Simon (i6),<br />

the youngest son <strong>of</strong> the emigrant Henry Wolcott. This Simon had nine<br />

children by his second wife, Martha Pitkin, <strong>of</strong> whom five were sons. The<br />

26 line <strong>of</strong> Sinion'° son <strong>of</strong> Simon, born in 1666, became extinct on the death<br />

27, 28 <strong>of</strong> his son James^ in 1748. The Hne <strong>of</strong> Henry^ son <strong>of</strong> the first Simon<br />

has been continued to the present time. We need not, however, here<br />

29 speak <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> his children excepting Capt. Gideon.^<br />

Capt. Gideon Wolcott was born in 171 2; married: first, Abigail<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Samuel Mather <strong>of</strong> Windsor ;<br />

<strong>and</strong>,<br />

secondly, Naomi daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Dea. Joseph Olmsted <strong>of</strong> East Hartford, Conn.; <strong>and</strong> died June 5, 1761.<br />

He "comm<strong>and</strong>ed one <strong>of</strong> the companies raised by the colonists in 1760<br />

against the French <strong>and</strong> Indians. We have only this tradition <strong>of</strong> him that<br />

' his contemporaries <strong>and</strong> those who knew him best regarded him as one <strong>of</strong><br />

nature's noblemen.'<br />

One son <strong>of</strong> Capt. Gideon Wolcott, by his second wife, was Samuel^<br />

married, in 1774, Jerusha daughter <strong>of</strong> Gen. Erastus,<br />

born in 1751 ; who<br />

<strong>and</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>daughter <strong>of</strong> Gov. Roger, Wolcott, his second cousin. He was,<br />

says a contemporary obituary <strong>of</strong> him.<br />

" 'distinguished for incorruptible integrity, beloved by a numerous acquaintance,<br />

a most judicious counsellor <strong>of</strong> the many who sought his assistance, <strong>and</strong> the poor<br />

man's friend.' "<br />

His robust frame <strong>and</strong> great manly beauty, in his youth, were remarked<br />

31 upon. Of Samuel Wolcott's children one daughter, Naomi,^ born in<br />

32 children :<br />

1777, married James Wadsworth <strong>of</strong> Geneseo, N. Y., <strong>and</strong> had, with other<br />

i. Harriet^ who married Martin Brimmer Esq. <strong>of</strong> Boston, Mass.;<br />

1,1 2. Elizabeth,'^ who married Hon. Charles Augustus Murray, British<br />

Consul-General in Egypt, a son <strong>of</strong> the Earl <strong>of</strong> Dunmore ;<br />

<strong>and</strong><br />

3. James<br />

34 Samiicl,'^ who left his large patrimonial estates to <strong>of</strong>fer his services to the<br />

Government on the breaking out <strong>of</strong> the late civil war, was made a Major-<br />
