1656;, who married, in 1678, Judith daughter <strong>of</strong> Samuel Appleton <strong>of</strong><br />

Ipswich, Mass.; <strong>and</strong> died in 1695.<br />

says Camden, " ' descended from Gospatrick Earl <strong>of</strong> Northumberl<strong>and</strong>,'<br />

<strong>and</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>daughter <strong>of</strong> Governor Edward Winslow ;<br />

<strong>and</strong>,<br />

secondly, in 1694,<br />

Mary daughter <strong>of</strong> John Freke Esq. <strong>of</strong> Boston, Mass. He settled himself<br />

in Salem, <strong>and</strong> was engaged in mercantile business there; but "in 1722<br />

appointed a Judge <strong>of</strong> the Court <strong>of</strong> Common Pleas, in which<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice he continued until his death" in 1729. We make the following<br />

extract from a letter <strong>of</strong> his to his brother Henry, as illustrative <strong>of</strong> the pre-<br />

vailing sentiment <strong>of</strong> the times <strong>of</strong> the Salem witchcraft<br />

<strong>and</strong> about Seaven before have Confest, <strong>and</strong> made a wonderfull Relation <strong>of</strong> there<br />

Compacts <strong>and</strong> pranks w" the Devell. Soe we have yet, here, at Ipswich <strong>and</strong> Boston,<br />

about 60 accused persons in Goale, <strong>of</strong> which 12 are Confessors, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> them good<br />

Mr. Higginson's daughter is one, who has long been melancholy <strong>and</strong> Seemed Crazed.<br />

It appears that y° Devell has not (as formerly) Gained a fiew discontented <strong>and</strong><br />

Revengefull persons, but was making a CoUony to set up his kingd" by force <strong>of</strong><br />
