clergyman, died <strong>of</strong> disease contracted in taking care <strong>of</strong> the sick in the late<br />

184 civil war. Thomas E. DeWolf <strong>of</strong> Salem, Mass., a member <strong>of</strong> the iS*""<br />

Conn. Regfiment, died <strong>of</strong> wounds received in the late war. As has been<br />

mentioned, Dr. Oscar C. De Wolf was a surgeon in the service <strong>of</strong> Massa-<br />

chusetts in the same war; <strong>and</strong> Lieut. William DeWolf, son <strong>of</strong> Hon.<br />

Frederick William, laid down his life in the battle <strong>of</strong> The' Wilderness.<br />

185 Capt. David O. DeWolf <strong>of</strong> Sackett's Harbor, N. Y., an active <strong>and</strong><br />

successful business-man <strong>and</strong> inventor, on the first firing upon Sumter,<br />

left all to engage for the war, was largely instrumental in raising a<br />

company, <strong>and</strong> then, after devoted attentions to the sick, was placed<br />

over the Quarter Master's Department. Having had a shoulder dis-<br />

located by an accident to the train which was carrying his regiment into<br />

service, <strong>and</strong> been carried to New York for surgical aid, he allowed himself<br />

but one hour for the setting <strong>of</strong> it, then escaped from his nurses <strong>and</strong><br />

rejoined his regiment. On the battle-field <strong>of</strong> Manassas he assumed the<br />

responsibility <strong>of</strong> drawing <strong>of</strong>f <strong>and</strong> thus saving Pope's train with material for<br />

30,000 men. Sherman's army, up to Atlanta, was provided for largely by<br />

his care, the money which passed through his h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong>ten amounting to<br />

millions in one month. A brother <strong>of</strong> Capt. David O. DeWolf is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>and</strong> Colonel Daniel DeWolf, now a planter in Georgia, formerly pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> modern languages in Western Reserve College, who served through the<br />

late war, <strong>and</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>ed a regiment at its close. A former college-<br />

associate <strong>of</strong> his has favored us with the following sketch : " Early in life<br />

he taught school <strong>and</strong> studied law ;<br />

he was a young lawyer in Toledo, Ohio,<br />

at the outbreak <strong>of</strong> the civil war. He served through the war, <strong>and</strong> was in<br />

comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> a regiment at its close. He then became Superintendent <strong>of</strong><br />

Schools in Toledo. He received the honorary degrees <strong>of</strong> A.M. <strong>and</strong> Ph.D.<br />

He went abroad in 1871. In 1876 he went to Western Reserve College<br />

as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages. He resigned in 1880, <strong>and</strong> was elected<br />
