1871 he became one <strong>of</strong> the first settlers <strong>of</strong> Vail, <strong>and</strong> here, too, "has<br />

taken an active part in schools <strong>and</strong> churches, <strong>and</strong> all public interests,"<br />

<strong>and</strong>, " wherever living has been, for many years, an Elder in the church,<br />

<strong>and</strong> an earnest worker in the sabbath-school, ever recognizing <strong>and</strong> appre-<br />

ciating Christian character, wherever found, without reference to sectarian<br />

lines. His family are in sympathy with him."<br />

178 AUSTIN 8 DeWOLF ESQ., now a lawyer in Greenfield, Mass.,<br />

was born in 1838, in Deerfield, Mass. He is the great great great gr<strong>and</strong>son<br />

<strong>of</strong> Josiah <strong>and</strong> Anna (Waterman) De Wolf, through Simon son <strong>of</strong> Josiah,<br />

179-81 Elisha^ son <strong>of</strong> Simon, Simon ^ son <strong>of</strong> Elisha, <strong>and</strong> Almon,'' son <strong>of</strong> Simon,<br />

who married Elvira Newton <strong>and</strong> had Austin. Mr. DeWolf writes <strong>of</strong><br />

himself as follows : " Modesty forbids me to write much <strong>of</strong> myself. I<br />

have been in practice here in Greenfield since 1863. I am not a graduate<br />

in course from any college. I received an honorary A.M., in 1881, from<br />

Trinity." Rt. Rev. Bishop Williams <strong>of</strong> Connecticut, a native <strong>of</strong> the same<br />

town, is a friend <strong>of</strong> his.<br />

Beside those individuals <strong>of</strong> the family <strong>of</strong> whose useful <strong>and</strong> honorable<br />

lives we thus catch glimpses, by the fragments <strong>of</strong> information which reach us,<br />

there may be grouped together several others, whose special distinction has<br />

been that they served their country in military <strong>of</strong>fices. The military career<br />

<strong>of</strong> the family began with Balthasar <strong>and</strong> his sons serving in the train-b<strong>and</strong>,<br />

or militia, <strong>of</strong> Lyme ; <strong>and</strong> there is a tradition that a De Wolf <strong>of</strong> the third<br />

generation—said to have borne the name <strong>of</strong> Simon—died <strong>of</strong> "the plague"<br />

(probably yellow fever), in 1741, in service under Admiral Vernon in the<br />

West Indies. Nathan DeWolf <strong>of</strong> Saybrook, afterwards <strong>of</strong> Nova Scotia,<br />

was, in 1755-56, Commissary in Col. Elihu Chauncey's regiment, in the<br />

expedition to Crown Point. Simon son <strong>of</strong> Josiah <strong>and</strong> Anna (Waterman)<br />

DeWolf served in the old French War, <strong>and</strong> died in the army, in 1756, at<br />

the age <strong>of</strong> thirty-six, leaving a widow <strong>and</strong> four children, from one <strong>of</strong> whom<br />
