Of these children, William Frederick was graduated Master <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

at Brown University in 1831, studied law, <strong>and</strong> in 1834 was admitted to the<br />

Bar, " <strong>and</strong> became the partner <strong>of</strong> Mr. Burgess in the practice <strong>of</strong> his pro-<br />

fession." On June 10", 1835, he was married, in Providence, R. I., to<br />

Margaret Padelford daughter <strong>of</strong> George R. Arnold, a merchant <strong>of</strong> that<br />

city. He was made Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Laws by Brown University in 1835. In<br />

1836 he began to practice his pr<strong>of</strong>ession at Alton, 111. In 1846 he was<br />

elected to the Legislature. In 1847 he removed to Chicago, where he filled<br />

important <strong>of</strong>fices until 1878. He was "an earnest Whig, <strong>and</strong> was fre-<br />

quently mentioned as a suitable person for the <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> Lieut-Governor<br />

155 <strong>and</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> State." His eldest son, William, fell in the service <strong>of</strong><br />

his country, in the battle <strong>of</strong> The Wilderness, in 1862, as Lieut, <strong>of</strong> the 3'^<br />

U. S. Artillery—to whom his comm<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong>ficer alluded as the "h<strong>and</strong>some,<br />

gallant boy from Chicago, named De Wolf ;" " his coolness <strong>and</strong><br />

gallantry, in the midst <strong>of</strong> no ordinary danger," were highly appreciated.<br />

Hon. James (130), son <strong>of</strong> Capt. Mark Anthony, had by Ann (Brad-<br />

ford) De Wolf five sons <strong>and</strong> five daughters :<br />
