"Another early poetical production <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor De Wolf, written<br />

during the war with Great Britain in 18 12, has been preserved, <strong>and</strong> may be<br />

found in a volume <strong>of</strong> naval <strong>and</strong> patriotic odes published in 1813 .<br />

a poem or song descriptive <strong>of</strong> the seizure <strong>and</strong> sufferings <strong>of</strong> American<br />

seamen who were taken from our vessels by British cruisers, <strong>and</strong> impressed<br />

into the British Navy. It is entitled ' The Youthful Sailor,' <strong>and</strong> American<br />

seamen who were taken prisoners <strong>and</strong> confined in the famous Dartmoor<br />

prison, in Engl<strong>and</strong>, during the war, informed Pr<strong>of</strong>essor De Wolf, after<br />

their liberation <strong>and</strong> return home, that they <strong>of</strong>ten sung this song during<br />

their imprisonment, <strong>and</strong> thereby excited the ire <strong>of</strong> the prison-<strong>of</strong>ficials, who<br />

repeatedly forbade them to use it, but they continued to sing it nevertheless.<br />

<strong>of</strong> Deacon Goodman, wherein is shown the<br />

inconvenience <strong>of</strong> not having a musical ear' was written by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

De Wolf not many years before his death. It first appeared in a Boston<br />

paper, <strong>and</strong> was extensively copied all over the Union.<br />

" Pr<strong>of</strong>essor De Wolf was not merely a literary man, but became a<br />

highly scientific man, well versed in ethics, mathematics <strong>and</strong> astronomy,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the various branches <strong>of</strong> natural philosophy, but more especially in<br />

chemistry, his favorite department, to which he devoted the best years <strong>of</strong><br />

his life. . . ."<br />
