143 De Wolf, was the father <strong>of</strong> the late Pr<strong>of</strong>essor John De Wolf, " who devoted<br />

himself to literature <strong>and</strong> science, <strong>and</strong> was for many years Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

Chemistry in Brown University." Pr<strong>of</strong>essor De Wolf was twice married :<br />

first, to Elizabeth James, called the " Goddess <strong>of</strong> Beauty ;" <strong>and</strong>, secondly,<br />

to Sylvia daughter <strong>of</strong> Rt. Rev. Alex<strong>and</strong>er Viets Griswold. Of our valued<br />

144 correspondents, Dr. John James De Wolf <strong>of</strong> Providence is a son <strong>of</strong> the<br />

145 first marriage ;<br />

Robert Shaw (Eliza Viets) Andrews <strong>of</strong> Bristol is a<br />

146 daughter <strong>of</strong> the second marriage ; <strong>and</strong> Mr. John De Wolf <strong>of</strong> New York,<br />

147 a son <strong>of</strong> Algernon Sidney De Wolf, is a gr<strong>and</strong>son <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor De Wolf<br />

by the second marriage.<br />

"PROFESSOR JOHN De WOLF," says his son Dr. J. J.<br />

De Wolf, "was born in Bristol, R. I., 26"^ February 1786, <strong>and</strong> died in the<br />

same town 23*^ February 1862. He entered Brown University in 1802,<br />

but did not graduate. His chemical education was mostly obtained from<br />

Dr. Robert Hare <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia. He was appointed Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Chem-<br />

istry in 1 81 7, <strong>and</strong> for more than twenty years pursued a course <strong>of</strong> brilliant<br />

success as a lecturer <strong>and</strong> experimenter. .<br />

the later years <strong>of</strong><br />

his Hfe he resided upon his farm in Bristol, occupied in the pursuits <strong>of</strong><br />

agriculture. He gave much time to reading <strong>and</strong> study. He became a dis-<br />

tinguished scholar in the English, Latin <strong>and</strong> Greek classics, <strong>and</strong> was a<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>icient in the Hebrew also. His works <strong>of</strong> history, poetry <strong>and</strong> belles-<br />

lettres he read ; those <strong>of</strong> science he stiidied.<br />

" In the course <strong>of</strong> his life he was frequently called upon to <strong>of</strong>ficiate<br />

as orator at public anniversaries <strong>and</strong> before literary associations. His<br />

addresses were always distinguished for their finished rhetoric <strong>and</strong> their<br />

sparkling wit. . . .<br />

" Pr<strong>of</strong>. De Wolf possessed decided poetical talent, <strong>and</strong> in his earlier<br />

years composed many fugitive pieces, which appeared in print from time to<br />

time, but few <strong>of</strong> which have been preserved. Among the latter may be<br />
