" James Ratchford De Wolf was born at Wolfville, N. S. <strong>and</strong> edu-<br />

cated at the Horton Institution, afterwards known as Acadia College.<br />

After having studied medicine with Dr. E. F. Harding <strong>of</strong> Windsor, N. S.,<br />

he proceeded to Edinburgh, at which University he was graduated M.D.<br />

in 1841, as also L.M.; <strong>and</strong> he took the diploma <strong>of</strong> the Royal College <strong>of</strong><br />

Surgeons, Edinburgh. He was while there House Surgeon to the<br />

Maternity Hospital, Clinical Clerk to Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Sir Robert Christison, <strong>and</strong><br />

Member <strong>of</strong> the Medical Society <strong>of</strong> Paris, <strong>and</strong> subsequently first Colonial<br />

Member <strong>of</strong> the Medico-psychological Association <strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>. After<br />

practicing two years at Kentville, N. S., he removed to Brigus, Newfound-<br />

l<strong>and</strong> ; <strong>and</strong>, returning thence to Halifax in 1844, he continued the general<br />

practice <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>ession in that city until he was appointed, in 1857, first<br />

Medical Superintendent <strong>of</strong> the Nova Scotia Hospital for the Insane, a post<br />

which he held for more than twenty years.<br />

" He was successively President <strong>of</strong> the N. S. Philanthropic Society<br />

(1849) <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> the N. S. Medical Society. Subsequently, 1871 to 1875,<br />

he was Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Medical Jurisprudence in Dalhousie University,<br />

Halifax ; resigning with several <strong>of</strong> the Faculty when the Medical College<br />

was separated from the University."<br />

Rev. Mr. Eaton's statements, which are more brief, relate chiefly to<br />

his own line <strong>of</strong> descent, from Jehiel De Wolf, one <strong>of</strong> the three <strong>of</strong> the<br />

name, as we have seen, who emigrated to Nova Scotia. He says :<br />

"Jehiel (25) De Wolf (born about 1724) married, about 1752, Phoebe<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Elisha <strong>and</strong> Mary (Harding) Cobb <strong>of</strong> Eastham (now Wellfleet),<br />

Mass., a very sweet <strong>and</strong> attractive woman. They lived in Killingworth,<br />

Conn., but in 1761 went to Nova Scotia. He died about 1798 ; she died<br />

about 1800. Their children were:<br />

"I. Phoebe, born December 12, 1752; who married, in September<br />

1770, Ezekiel Comstock <strong>of</strong> Horton, N. S.<br />

" 2. Jehiel, born about 1755 ; who married: i"', July 15, 1777, Eliza-<br />

beth Martin ; <strong>and</strong>, 2'^'^, Anna Witter.<br />

"3. Margaret, born about 1757; who married: i"', April 14, 1774,<br />

Samuel Witter ;<br />

<strong>and</strong>,<br />

2'"^ James Brown.<br />

who married Amy Bishop.<br />
