filling the position <strong>of</strong> Justices <strong>of</strong> the Peace, Assistant Judges <strong>of</strong> the County-<br />

Court, Judges <strong>of</strong> Probate, High Sheriffs, Coroners, Post-masters, Collec-<br />

tors <strong>of</strong> Customs <strong>and</strong> Excise ; <strong>and</strong> one a Member <strong>of</strong> the first Executive<br />

Council <strong>of</strong> his native Province. Ten or more <strong>of</strong> their descendants became<br />

medical practitioners, <strong>of</strong> whom three were graduates <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh Uni-<br />

versity. The Church has been the chosen pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> some, while others<br />

have been members <strong>of</strong> the Bar. The greater number have been engaged<br />

in agricultural or commercial pursuits, or in the various trades <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>i-<br />

crafts. As to the political status <strong>of</strong> the De Wolfs, they have been Tories<br />

from the time any <strong>of</strong> us can remember.<br />

" The American De Wolfs, whether <strong>of</strong> New Engl<strong>and</strong> or Canada, are<br />

noted for their habits <strong>of</strong> enterprise <strong>and</strong> industry, their love <strong>of</strong> change <strong>and</strong><br />

adventure, their freedom from ostentation, their domestic virtues <strong>and</strong> their<br />

numerous progeny ;<br />

<strong>of</strong> longevity among them.<br />

as also for their healthiness, <strong>and</strong> the frequent instances<br />

"Of the more prominent <strong>of</strong> the descendants <strong>of</strong> Balthasar De Wolf<br />

in Nova Scotia were Nathan, Benjamin <strong>and</strong> Elisha, all natives <strong>of</strong> Connec-<br />

<strong>of</strong> a later date, the Honourable Thomas Andrew Strange<br />

ticut ; <strong>and</strong>,<br />

De Wolf. Respecting each <strong>of</strong> these we will now add some genealogical<br />

<strong>and</strong> biographical items <strong>of</strong> information, as follows :<br />

"NATHAN (24) DeWOLF, born at Saybrook, Conn., in 1720;<br />

was graduated A.M. at Yale College, New Haven, in 1743; <strong>and</strong> engaged<br />

in the practice <strong>of</strong> law. He had previously 'owned the covenant' (or<br />

joined the Congregational Church), 7"^ June 1741.<br />

"He married, in 1748, Lydia Kirtl<strong>and</strong>, who was born at Saybrook,<br />

28*'' October 1721, daughter <strong>of</strong> John Kirtl<strong>and</strong> by his second wife Lydia<br />

Belden.<br />

"They removed to Horton in 1761, with their children :<br />

" I. Ltuilla ; who married Lebbeus Harris.<br />

Edward, born in 1752.<br />

Lo7^an, born f"^ April 1754.<br />

Elisha, born 5*^ May 1756.<br />
