187 (5.) John^ born August 14, 1783 ; an affluent Shipping Merchant <strong>of</strong><br />

New York, head <strong>of</strong> the famous old line <strong>of</strong> London packet-ships which<br />

bore his name. He was a tall, finely formed man with a very noble h<strong>and</strong>-<br />

some face. He married: first, May 16, 1814, Elizabeth Mary daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

General Zachariah Huntington <strong>of</strong> Norwich, Conn.; <strong>and</strong>, secondly, in 1826,<br />

Louisa Wilson <strong>of</strong> Newark, N. J., an English lady, who survived him ;<br />

died August 4, 1856, j. /.<br />

<strong>and</strong><br />

In memory <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Elizabeth Mary (Huntington) Griswold the<br />

following lines were written by Mrs. Sigourney<br />

" She was as a rose<br />

Gathered in loveliness 'mid perfumed flowers,<br />

And warbling birds <strong>of</strong> love, yet drooping still<br />

For the pure breath <strong>of</strong> that celestial clime<br />

Where summer hath no cloud. She with firm h<strong>and</strong><br />

Grasped the strong hope <strong>of</strong> everlasting life,<br />

And then, in trembling yet confiding trust.<br />

Did dare the waves <strong>of</strong> Death's tempestuous flood."'"<br />

(6.) Mary Ann^ born February 25, 1786; who married, November<br />

6, 1809, Levi H. Clark <strong>of</strong> Middletown, Conn., a lawyer; <strong>and</strong> died January<br />

189 31, 1812. Mrs. Elisabeth Brainerd^ (Clark) White, widow <strong>of</strong> Bushnell<br />

White Esq., a lawyer <strong>of</strong> Clevel<strong>and</strong>, Ohio ("a very brilliant man <strong>and</strong> a<br />

igo<br />

magnetic speaker"), <strong>and</strong> mother oi John Griswold"^ White, is her daughter.<br />

191 (7.) Charles Ch<strong>and</strong>ler^ born November 9, 1787; who married, July<br />

10, 1822, his third cousin Elizabeth daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas Griswold <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Giant's Neck branch (see above) ; by whom he had, with other children,<br />

Elizabeth Diodate (69), who married Judge William Griswold Lane, <strong>and</strong><br />

Sarah Johnson (70), who married Lorillard Spencer; <strong>and</strong> died January 27,<br />

1869, leaving a widow who died, in Lyme, December 19, 1888.<br />

In early life Charles Ch<strong>and</strong>ler Griswold was in business in Savannah ;<br />

but he returned to his family-property at Blackball, where he removed his<br />

father's house, <strong>and</strong> built a large modern mansion, retaining near it, for his<br />
