171 (3-) Elizabeth,'^ born October 15, 1778; who married, March 28,<br />

1802, Jacob Barker Gurley <strong>of</strong> New London, Conn., graduated at Dart-<br />

mouth College in 1 793, a man <strong>of</strong> very astute mind <strong>and</strong> high character ; a<br />

lawyer. State's Attorney <strong>and</strong> President <strong>of</strong> the New London Bank ;<br />

<strong>and</strong><br />

died a widow, June 22, 1857, having had ten children, all <strong>of</strong> whom except<br />

one she survived.<br />

She bore her great griefs with an almost stoical composure, <strong>and</strong> to her<br />

last days met her friends with a calm <strong>and</strong> cheerful mien. Her only living<br />

1 72 descendants are Mrs. Elizabeth ^ (Gurley) Merrow, <strong>and</strong> her three children,<br />

173 daughter <strong>of</strong> her daughter Ellen^ who married her cousin Charles Artemas<br />

1 74 Gurley ; three great gr<strong>and</strong>daughters, children <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Ursula Wolcott ^<br />

175 (Noyes) Grosvenor, daughter <strong>of</strong> her daughter Sarah Griswold^ who<br />

married Joseph Noyes <strong>of</strong> Lyme, Conn.; <strong>and</strong> a great gr<strong>and</strong>son, son <strong>of</strong><br />

177 (4-) Sarah^ born August 12, 1781; who married, March 4, 1803,<br />

John Lyon Gardiner Esq., the seventh proprietor <strong>of</strong> the Manor <strong>of</strong><br />

Gardiner's Isl<strong>and</strong>, N. Y., by whom she had five children ; <strong>and</strong><br />

February 10, 1863.<br />

Mrs. Gardiner was a lady <strong>of</strong> much strength <strong>of</strong> mind <strong>and</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong><br />

character. During a long widowhood she had the management <strong>of</strong> a large<br />

estate, <strong>and</strong> administered its hospitalities as a true "lady <strong>of</strong> the manor." At<br />

the time <strong>of</strong> this marriage the original charter <strong>of</strong> Gardiner's Isl<strong>and</strong>, which<br />

made it an entirely independent <strong>and</strong> separate plantation, with no responsi-<br />

bility for laws civil or ecclesiastical, was no longer in force ; <strong>and</strong><br />

the lord-<br />

ship, with right <strong>of</strong> advowson, <strong>and</strong> to hold a court leet <strong>and</strong> a court baron,<br />

which had been subsequently created, was extinguished by the establish-<br />

ment <strong>of</strong> the Republic <strong>of</strong> the United States.<br />

But the property was still entailed on the eldest son. The eldest son<br />
