Lynde Sen., <strong>and</strong> first cousin <strong>of</strong> Chief Justice Benjamin Lynde Jun.<br />

Governor Matthew Griswold's brother Thomas married Susannah Lynde,<br />

niece <strong>of</strong> Hannah, who was one generation farther removed.<br />

By a singular coincidence, Sarah Johnson, the wife <strong>of</strong> John the eldest<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Governor Matthew <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Ursula (Wolcott) Griswold, being <strong>of</strong><br />

Ogden blood, through her paternal gr<strong>and</strong>mother Sarah (Ogden) Johnson,<br />

was related to all the high Judges, Governors, Generals, etc., who have<br />

made the Ogden name one <strong>of</strong> the most distinguished in this country.<br />

It is also remarkable that Judge M'^Curdy (II. 31), being <strong>of</strong> Wolcott,<br />

Griswold, Lynde <strong>and</strong> Ogden descent, could be counted among Judges <strong>of</strong><br />

Lynde <strong>and</strong> Ogden, as well as <strong>of</strong> Wolcott-Griswold, lineage.<br />

were :<br />

1780; who married, September 4, 1788, Lydia daughter <strong>of</strong> Deacon Seth<br />

Ely <strong>of</strong> Lyme; <strong>and</strong>, having settled in Lyme, died there, June 10, 1842,<br />

.y. p. A letter from his father to him while in college, now lying before<br />

us, is too characteristic <strong>of</strong> the times to be left out <strong>of</strong> this record :<br />

" Dear Son,<br />

"Lyme, Nov. 8"", 1779.<br />

"Thro' Divine Goodness wee are all in usual health— I have herewith Sent<br />

You a Thirty Dollar bill to purchase a Ticket in the Continental Lottery in the Third<br />

Class: / suppose they are to be had in New Haven <strong>of</strong> Deacon Austin; I wish you good<br />

Sicccess with it. If they are not to be had in New Haven, you will Enquire <strong>and</strong>purchase one<br />

Elseiuhere.—If there be no Chance to purchase one, lay up )four Money, <strong>and</strong> keep it<br />

safe.— I hope you will pursue your Studies with Dilligence <strong>and</strong> Industry— But above<br />

all keep Holy the Sabbath Day, iWid pay all Possible Regard to Religion : a vertuous Life<br />

is the only Foundation upon which you can Depend to be Comfortable here <strong>and</strong> Happy in the<br />

Coining World—the Joy <strong>of</strong> your Friends <strong>and</strong> a Blessing to the world.<br />
