" The Manor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Olmsted</strong> Hall partly <strong>in</strong> this parish and partly <strong>in</strong> that<br />

<strong>of</strong> Bumpsted St. Helion, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> County <strong>of</strong> Essex, was successively <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

families <strong>of</strong> <strong>Olmsted</strong>^ and Skrene* ; and now belongs to <strong>the</strong> Master and<br />

fellows <strong>of</strong> Queen's College <strong>in</strong> Cambridge."<br />

TRANSLATION<br />

(From Norman -French)<br />

John <strong>of</strong> Olmested holds <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hamlet <strong>of</strong> Olmested a messuage with garden<br />

cover<strong>in</strong>g two acres <strong>of</strong> land, eighty acres <strong>of</strong> land, five acres <strong>of</strong> meadow, three<br />

acres <strong>of</strong> pasture, three acres <strong>of</strong> wood, as half a knight's fee <strong>of</strong> Robert de Vere,<br />

Earl <strong>of</strong> Oxford, under <strong>the</strong> honour <strong>of</strong> Richmond, and pays p. annum to <strong>the</strong> said<br />

Earl, five shill<strong>in</strong>gs, and makes yearly suit at <strong>the</strong> court <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> honour <strong>of</strong> Richmond<br />

at Babraham, and at <strong>the</strong> court <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said Earl at Camps, and <strong>the</strong> Earl<br />

<strong>of</strong> Oxford held <strong>the</strong> said tenancy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Earl <strong>of</strong> Brittanny, and <strong>the</strong> same Earl<br />

was tenant <strong>in</strong> chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Peter Walpole holds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said John <strong>of</strong> <strong>Olmsted</strong> 26 acres <strong>of</strong> land with a<br />

messuage, and 3^ an acre <strong>of</strong> meadow, and 3^ an acre <strong>of</strong> pasture, and pays<br />

per annum 2/2.<br />

Robert Pass<strong>in</strong>gbal held <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same John 18 acres <strong>of</strong> land with messuage,<br />

and J^ an acre <strong>of</strong> meadow and pays p. ann. 3/4.<br />

Roger <strong>of</strong> Stambourn held <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same John 5 acres <strong>of</strong> land, and pays p.<br />

a. 2/5.<br />

Nuce Alomes held <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same John 3 acres <strong>of</strong> land with messauge, and<br />

pays 2/6 p. a.<br />

Dork<strong>in</strong> Barker holds a messauge cover<strong>in</strong>g }/2 a rood, and pays p. a. 5dj<br />

William Malfield held <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same John 3 roods <strong>of</strong> land and pays p. a. 5d.
