(9145) JABEZ OLMSTED, b. <strong>in</strong> Berkshire County, Mass., abt. 1760; m.<br />

abt. 1780, FUzabeth . He enlisted <strong>in</strong> Capt. Judah Williams' Co. <strong>in</strong><br />

1777 but was transferred to Capt. Warren's Co., Col. Bayley's Regt. The<br />

enlistment was for three years but <strong>the</strong>re does not appear to have been any record<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> actual service.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> war he removed to Hebron, Wash<strong>in</strong>gton County,<br />

N. Y. But one child is found recorded <strong>in</strong> Williamstown, Mass. He is known<br />

10 have had sons.<br />

In 1790 he was liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Hebron, N. Y. His <strong>family</strong> <strong>the</strong>n consisted <strong>of</strong><br />

his wife and two sons under 16 years <strong>of</strong> age. No fur<strong>the</strong>r record <strong>of</strong> his <strong>family</strong><br />

has been found. He may have been one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sons <strong>of</strong> Jabez who removed<br />

to Canada.<br />

Mr. <strong>Olmsted</strong> enlisted Oct. 15, 1780, at Williamstown, Mass., <strong>in</strong> Capt.<br />

Sylvanus Wilcox's Co., Col. John Ashley's Regt., Berkshire County Militia.<br />

The records show but two days' service, but it is certa<strong>in</strong> that he served longer.<br />

He gave his fl<strong>in</strong>t lock musket to his grandson, Jeremiah <strong>Olmsted</strong> (now liv<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

1912) who kept it many years and is certa<strong>in</strong> that his grandfa<strong>the</strong>r saw considerable<br />

service.<br />

Jeremiah and his bro<strong>the</strong>r Gideon removed from Berkshire County,<br />

Mass., to <strong>the</strong> present town <strong>of</strong> Hope, Hamilton County, N. Y., <strong>the</strong>n a part <strong>of</strong><br />

Montgomery County, about 1790. French's Gazeteer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> N. Y.,<br />

1860, says <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>the</strong> first settlers <strong>in</strong> that town. Luc<strong>in</strong>da <strong>Olmsted</strong> was<br />

<strong>the</strong> first child born <strong>in</strong> that town.<br />

He removed with <strong>the</strong> <strong>family</strong> <strong>of</strong> his son Isaac to Spafford, Onandaga County,<br />

N. Y., before 1840.<br />
