Charles <strong>Olmsted</strong> was educated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> public schools <strong>of</strong> Fremont, Ohio,<br />

and received his early bus<strong>in</strong>ess education at his fa<strong>the</strong>r's establishment. In<br />

1854 he came to Fostoria and was employed as bookkeeper and afterwards<br />

clerk by Chas. Foster, fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Secretary <strong>of</strong> U. S. Treasury.<br />

In 1858 Chas. Foster, Sr., retired, and Mr. <strong>Olmsted</strong> formed a partnership<br />

with Chas. Foster, Jr., <strong>the</strong> firm be<strong>in</strong>g " Foster, <strong>Olmsted</strong> & Co." and for many<br />

years enjoyed <strong>the</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> largest general store <strong>in</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Ohio. No concern was more successful f<strong>in</strong>ancially than this, <strong>the</strong>y hav<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

wide reputation for honest deal<strong>in</strong>gs and strict <strong>in</strong>tegiity. In 1875 Mr. <strong>Olmsted</strong><br />

retired from <strong>the</strong> dry goods bus<strong>in</strong>ess and entered <strong>the</strong> gra<strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>the</strong> firm<br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same and for 15 years was a most successful buyer and seller<br />

<strong>of</strong> all k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> gra<strong>in</strong>, be<strong>in</strong>g well known <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> produce exchanges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country.<br />

In 1890 he retired from active bus<strong>in</strong>ess and founded <strong>the</strong> Mechanics Sav<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

Bank <strong>of</strong> Fostoria <strong>of</strong> which he became President. In 1864, he enlisted as 2d<br />

Lieut, <strong>in</strong> a company <strong>of</strong> volunteers, formed at Fostoria, return<strong>in</strong>g after 100<br />

days' service. He was a prom<strong>in</strong>ent man <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> community.<br />
