In 1877 Mr. William <strong>Olmsted</strong> entered <strong>the</strong> law oifice <strong>of</strong> Close & Robertson<br />

at White Pla<strong>in</strong>s, N. Y., and was admitted to <strong>the</strong> Bar as Attorney and<br />

Counselor, <strong>in</strong> 1880, and after rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> firm for a time, left to accept<br />

a position <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Custom House <strong>in</strong> New York, where he was engaged at <strong>the</strong><br />

tirne <strong>of</strong> his death. His ability and energy were rewarded with promotion<br />

and he was made Assistant Chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bureau <strong>of</strong> Correspondence, which<br />

position he creditably filled to <strong>the</strong> last. His many estimable and attractive<br />

personal qualities ga<strong>in</strong>ed for him many steadfast friends, and his <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Custom House conta<strong>in</strong>s many evidences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> love and esteem which his<br />

associates <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess had for him. He came from old Revolutionary stock,<br />

his great-grandfa<strong>the</strong>r. Major David <strong>Olmsted</strong>, hav<strong>in</strong>g been one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Colonists<br />

who gave <strong>the</strong> alarm before <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Lex<strong>in</strong>gton. After <strong>the</strong> Revolution<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>family</strong> settled <strong>in</strong> Bedford and it is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest <strong>in</strong> Westchester County,<br />

some <strong>of</strong> its members still resid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al homestead <strong>in</strong> Bedford. He<br />

was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Revolution and a veteran<br />

<strong>of</strong> N. G. S. N. Y., hav<strong>in</strong>g been a member <strong>of</strong> Company B., Twenty-third<br />

Regiment, Brooklyn, <strong>of</strong> which company he was Corporal.
