Confederated State Army <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civil War. Commanded at Fort Pulaski<br />

when taken by <strong>the</strong> U. S. forces. Served at Charleston, S. C. He has published<br />

an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g address delivered before <strong>the</strong> Georgia Historical Society, Mar. 3,<br />

1879, on "Rem<strong>in</strong>iscences <strong>of</strong> Service with <strong>the</strong> 1st Vol. Regt. <strong>of</strong> Georgia, <strong>in</strong><br />

Charleston Harbor, <strong>in</strong> 1863." He is an Elder <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian Church.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> war he was on <strong>the</strong> stafi <strong>of</strong> Gov. Gordon <strong>of</strong> Georgia, as Quartermaster<br />

General. While serv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> that capacity, <strong>the</strong> Governor and staff called upon<br />

President Cleveland, at some special function <strong>in</strong> Philadelphia. As <strong>the</strong>y<br />

waited <strong>in</strong> an anteroom. Gov. Lounsbury, <strong>of</strong> Connecticut, entered with his<br />

staff, upon <strong>the</strong> same errand. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter gentlemen drew near to Gov.<br />

Gordon's group and, speak<strong>in</strong>g to Col. <strong>Olmsted</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividually, said: " Permit me<br />

to <strong>in</strong>troduce myself: Col. Charles <strong>Olmsted</strong>, Quartermaster General <strong>of</strong> Connecticut"<br />

(No. 1802). To which Col. <strong>Olmsted</strong> <strong>of</strong> Georgia replied: " Permit me to<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduce myself: Col. Charles <strong>Olmsted</strong>, Quartermaster General <strong>of</strong> Georgia."<br />
