Lemuel Gregory <strong>Olmsted</strong> graduated <strong>in</strong> 1830 at <strong>the</strong> Rensselaer Institute,<br />

a scientific school located at Troy, N. Y., under <strong>the</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>. Amos<br />

Eaton. For a short time he filled <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>, <strong>of</strong> Chemistry and<br />

Natural History <strong>in</strong> Dick<strong>in</strong>son College, Carlisle, Pa. He afterwards pursued<br />

his studies at Union College, Schenectady, N. Y., where he graduated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Class <strong>of</strong> 1834, and cont<strong>in</strong>ued his preparations for <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istry at Pr<strong>in</strong>ceton<br />

and Allegheny Theo. Sem<strong>in</strong>aries. He was orda<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian<br />

m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>in</strong> 1837 and entered upon active service. A considerable portion <strong>of</strong><br />

his life was spent <strong>in</strong> classical and scientific teach<strong>in</strong>g. In 1864, he received <strong>the</strong><br />

degree <strong>of</strong> LL. D. from Hanover College, Ind. He spent some years <strong>in</strong> Europe<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pursuit <strong>of</strong> his favorite studies, and travelled extensively through <strong>the</strong><br />

several states <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Union, engaged <strong>in</strong> rock and m<strong>in</strong>eral exam<strong>in</strong>ations. He<br />

was a frequent contributor to scientific periodicals and his collections <strong>in</strong> illustration<br />

<strong>of</strong> all branches <strong>of</strong> Natural History were quite extensive. His last<br />

active service <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>istry was Chapla<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> U. S. Army. Upon <strong>the</strong><br />

close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civil War, he removed to <strong>the</strong> farm <strong>in</strong> Moreau, Saratoga County,<br />

which was formerly his fa<strong>the</strong>r's residence, and <strong>the</strong>re pursued his researches,<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>cipally <strong>in</strong> archeology, <strong>of</strong>ficiat<strong>in</strong>g as occasion <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>in</strong> preach<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

lectur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g villages and country. He was buried <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>family</strong> bury<strong>in</strong>g ground on <strong>the</strong> farm.<br />
