" The w<strong>in</strong>ter that I was six years old my fa<strong>the</strong>r Eliphalet, and bro<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

Stephen, went to a nearby field to get some dry wood for k<strong>in</strong>dl<strong>in</strong>g from some<br />

p<strong>in</strong>e stumps and while <strong>the</strong>re fa<strong>the</strong>r dropped dead. A few years after his death<br />

my mo<strong>the</strong>r married Jacob Handy and lived at Cor<strong>in</strong>th, where she died <strong>in</strong> March,<br />

1867. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> time she lived with Jacob Handy his house was destroyed<br />

by fire and my fa<strong>the</strong>r's Bible and records were burned at that time. In 1849<br />

my bro<strong>the</strong>r, Eleazer, visited my mo<strong>the</strong>r but I, be<strong>in</strong>g away at work, did not<br />

see him. Late <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> 1850 I decided to go West and see my bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Eleazer, <strong>the</strong>n liv<strong>in</strong>g near Jefferson, N. Y. (now Watk<strong>in</strong>s). When I reached<br />

his home we certa<strong>in</strong>ly did not know each o<strong>the</strong>r as he was married and gone<br />

before I was born, and we had never seen each o<strong>the</strong>r. I stayed with him dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that w<strong>in</strong>ter, and <strong>the</strong> next summer (1851) I worked <strong>in</strong> Read<strong>in</strong>g, now <strong>in</strong><br />
