Until twenty years <strong>of</strong> age Ph<strong>in</strong>eas P. <strong>Olmsted</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued to make his home<br />

with his parents, attend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> common schools, and received practical <strong>in</strong>struction<br />

on his fa<strong>the</strong>r's farm <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> duties perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to agriculture. Start<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for <strong>the</strong> West he worked at different po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> order to obta<strong>in</strong> money to cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

his journey, and for a time was employed at Madison, Wis. From<br />

<strong>the</strong>re he proceeded to Grant County, <strong>the</strong>nce to Prairie du Chien, <strong>in</strong> which<br />

place he resided until April 1st, 1840. Near Patch Grove, Wis., he taught<br />

school for three months, when he learned that <strong>the</strong> government had commenced<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g Ft. Atk<strong>in</strong>son on <strong>the</strong> Turkey River, and <strong>in</strong> company with his bro<strong>the</strong>r<br />

he went <strong>the</strong>re to look <strong>the</strong> country over. This bro<strong>the</strong>r and he soon selected a<br />

claim <strong>in</strong> what is now Monona Township, and <strong>the</strong> two were <strong>the</strong> first to settle<br />

with<strong>in</strong> its limits. They built a cab<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> July, 1840, and kept house <strong>in</strong> primitive<br />

fashion, <strong>of</strong>ten enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g travelers, and also Indians. At that time <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were about two hundred red men <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> township, who were known as <strong>the</strong><br />

Whirl<strong>in</strong>g Thunder Band. At one time when <strong>the</strong> cab<strong>in</strong> was only partially<br />

constructed, <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> our subject was obliged to go on bus<strong>in</strong>ess to Wiscons<strong>in</strong>,<br />

and dur<strong>in</strong>g his absence about eight Indians came to beg for food;<br />

young Ph<strong>in</strong>eas gave <strong>the</strong>m what he could, for his supplies were at a low ebb,<br />

but it was evident that <strong>the</strong> red men were not satisfied, as <strong>the</strong>y kept look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

aroimd <strong>in</strong> all corners for more. See<strong>in</strong>g a knife <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hand <strong>of</strong> a murderous-
