He left New York for Indiana <strong>in</strong> Dec, 1817, leav<strong>in</strong>g his <strong>family</strong> <strong>in</strong> Manlius,<br />

N. Y., near his fa<strong>the</strong>r's residence, where 6 <strong>of</strong> his children were born, for six<br />

months, when <strong>the</strong>y went to Evansville, Ind.<br />

He was at one time Judge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Court <strong>of</strong> Vanderburg County, Ind.<br />

Extract from an obituary notice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> EDisville, Kentucky, Journal:<br />

" A man <strong>of</strong> extraord<strong>in</strong>ary talent, one <strong>of</strong> a rare few who have learned <strong>the</strong><br />

art <strong>of</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g old gracefully."<br />

" Though resid<strong>in</strong>g with those who had embarked <strong>the</strong> scions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir house<br />

and every life-hope upon <strong>the</strong> success or failvure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Confederacy, he never<br />

even momentarily wavered from what he considered his duty, and this was a<br />

staunch and devoted love for <strong>the</strong> Union and <strong>the</strong> Constitution."<br />

The Ferris <strong>family</strong> were <strong>of</strong> Connecticut orig<strong>in</strong>, but moved over <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong>to Salem, Westchester County, N. Y. at an early date. Sylvanus Ferris<br />

came to Herkimer County, N. Y., <strong>in</strong> 1797, <strong>in</strong> a two-wheeled vehicle. Mrs.<br />

Ferris was a model woman for pioneer life. Her husband was clear-headed<br />

and sagacious, and possessed a high order <strong>of</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess talent. Success seemed<br />

to attend all his ventures. His large <strong>family</strong> was carefully reared and well<br />

educated for <strong>the</strong> time <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y lived. The parents were staunch Presby-
