Zalmon <strong>Olmsted</strong> was <strong>in</strong> all his characteristics a strik<strong>in</strong>g type <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Norseman—six feet <strong>in</strong> height, erect, and muscular, no way <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to corpulence,<br />

weigh<strong>in</strong>g about 180 pounds, flaxen hair (light brown), fair complexion,<br />

<strong>of</strong> extraord<strong>in</strong>ary physical strength; fearless <strong>in</strong> what he conceived to be right,<br />

firm <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> discharge <strong>of</strong> duty, <strong>of</strong> good judgment and strictest <strong>in</strong>tegrity, respected<br />

and trusted <strong>in</strong> every relation <strong>of</strong> life—he was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> that political<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ction a pronounced Federalist and rhember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati." He<br />

<strong>in</strong>variably decl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>of</strong>fice but was for many years School Inspector and Commissioner,<br />

takihg an active part <strong>in</strong> every movement for <strong>the</strong> advancement <strong>of</strong><br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g and religion.<br />

At three years <strong>of</strong> age his fa<strong>the</strong>r moved to Stillwater (now Malta), Saratoga<br />

County, N. Y. Later he removed to Moreau <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same county. His<br />

farm <strong>of</strong> 800 acres lay on <strong>the</strong> west bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hudson River, about three miles<br />

south <strong>of</strong> Fort Edward. Here he died, Dec. 6, 1853, and lies buried <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>family</strong> ground on <strong>the</strong> farm.<br />

Rebecca, his widow, cont<strong>in</strong>ued to live on <strong>the</strong> same farm until her death,<br />

Sept. 27, 1861, and was buried by <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> her husband.<br />

Coleman <strong>Olmsted</strong> settled on <strong>the</strong> farm <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r, where he was born,<br />

lived and died. He lived <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> a quiet, <strong>in</strong>telligent farmer.<br />

Joshua <strong>Olmsted</strong> settled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Stillwater, Saratoga Coimty, N. Y.,<br />

about a mile east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eastern shore <strong>of</strong> Saratoga Lake. He was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

pioneers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> settlement <strong>of</strong> Owego and Nichols <strong>in</strong> Tioga County, N. Y. and<br />

removed thi<strong>the</strong>r and settled <strong>in</strong> an unbroken wilderness where he subdued and<br />

cultivated a f<strong>in</strong>e farm.
