m. (1) May 20, 1791, Ruth Hubbell; b. Apr. 3, 1770; d. Sept. 1, 1826; dau.<br />

<strong>of</strong> Seth Hubbell; (2) Mrs. Glorianna (Hubbell) Keeler, sister <strong>of</strong> above and<br />

widow <strong>of</strong> Rufus Keeler. Mr. <strong>Olmsted</strong> and first wife moved from Connecticut<br />

with an ox team to Elmore, Vt. He was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early settlers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town.<br />

His wife was <strong>the</strong> only woman <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> place dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first w<strong>in</strong>ter <strong>of</strong> settlement.<br />

He was a farmer. Cleared his land and lived on it until his death.<br />

The town <strong>of</strong> Elmore, Vt., was charted by Mart<strong>in</strong> and Jesse Elmore, James<br />

and Seth <strong>Olmsted</strong>, and settlement commenced by <strong>the</strong>m July, 1790. They<br />

came from Norwalk, Conn. The first town meet<strong>in</strong>g was held July 23, 1792.<br />

James <strong>Olmsted</strong> was chosen one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Selectmen. Harry <strong>Olmsted</strong> was <strong>the</strong><br />

first child born <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> town. Seth <strong>Olmsted</strong> built <strong>the</strong> first hotel, open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

same <strong>in</strong> 1813. He was a Mason and <strong>the</strong> Lodge meet<strong>in</strong>gs were held at his<br />

hotel. A sign, hung before <strong>the</strong> entrance, bore <strong>the</strong> square and compass.<br />
