In May or June, 1776, he enlisted at Norwalk for 6 months, under Capt.<br />

Beach, <strong>in</strong> Col. Swift's Regt; marched to Skenesboro, now Whitehall, N. Y.,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n to Fort Independence (Ticonderoga), and was discharged <strong>in</strong> December at<br />

Fort Edward. In <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>of</strong> 1777 he was enrolled as a m<strong>in</strong>ute man <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Cavalry for <strong>the</strong> War, at Norwalk, under Capt. Gregory, which was'organized<br />

for <strong>the</strong> protection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> frontier, aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>cursions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemy; and <strong>the</strong><br />

tours <strong>of</strong> duty service would be from one to eight weeks—one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m was to<br />

Stony-Po<strong>in</strong>t, immediately after <strong>the</strong> capture <strong>of</strong> Major Andre, and ano<strong>the</strong>r was<br />

to S<strong>in</strong>g S<strong>in</strong>g, N. Y.<br />

He was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> engagement which followed <strong>the</strong> land<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> British at,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> burn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>, Norwalk and Fairfield, and <strong>in</strong> skirmishes with <strong>the</strong> notorious<br />

" Cow-boys " who <strong>in</strong>fested and plundered <strong>the</strong> country between <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

He was taken prisoner by <strong>the</strong> British at <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Danbury, or Ridgefield,<br />

AprE 26, 1777, but escaped <strong>the</strong> same even<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

About 1790 he went on horseback to Elmore, Vt.; <strong>the</strong>nce after a few<br />

years to Cambridge, Vt., where he rema<strong>in</strong>ed 7 years, <strong>the</strong>nce to Waterville,<br />

Vt., from <strong>the</strong>re to St. Armands, Canada, for 12 years, and <strong>the</strong>nce to<br />

Marcellus, N. Y.<br />

The follow<strong>in</strong>g facts were sworn to by Isaac <strong>Olmsted</strong>'s second wife, <strong>in</strong><br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g application for a pension Jan. 6, 1845. She lived at Wilton, Fairfield<br />

County, Conn. At <strong>the</strong> tihie <strong>of</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g this application she was 83 years <strong>of</strong><br />

age. " Isaac <strong>Olmsted</strong> m. at Rye, Westchester County, N. Y., Sept. 24th or<br />

25th, 1793, Sarah Lyon, <strong>of</strong> Greenwich, Conn., and d. at Wilton, Conn., Dec.<br />

31, 1797. John S. <strong>the</strong>ir only child was liv<strong>in</strong>g at Wilton, Conn., <strong>in</strong> 1846."
