Mrs. Olmsted d. in St. Armands, Canada. In May or June, 1776, he enlisted at Norwalk for 6 months, under Capt. Beach, in Col. Swift's Regt; marched to Skenesboro, now Whitehall, N. Y., then to Fort Independence (Ticonderoga), and was discharged in December at Fort Edward. In the summer of 1777 he was enrolled as a minute man ofthe Cavalry for the War, at Norwalk, under Capt. Gregory, which was'organized for the protection ofthe frontier, against theincursions ofthe enemy; and the tours of duty service would be from one to eight weeks—one ofthem was to Stony-Point, immediately after the capture of Major Andre, and another was to Sing Sing, N. Y. He was inthe engagement which followed the landing ofthe British at, and the burning of, Norwalk and Fairfield, and in skirmishes with the notorious " Cow-boys " who infested and plundered the country between the lines. He was taken prisoner by the British at the battle of Danbury, or Ridgefield, AprE 26, 1777, but escaped the same evening. About 1790 he went on horseback to Elmore, Vt.; thence after a few years to Cambridge, Vt., where he remained 7 years, thence to Waterville, Vt., from there to St. Armands, Canada, for 12 years, and thence to Marcellus, N.
