Hon. A. R. Burnham was a native <strong>of</strong> W<strong>in</strong>dham, Conn. He was born <strong>in</strong><br />

what is now <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Scotland; attended <strong>the</strong> District School till fourteen<br />

years <strong>of</strong> age, and <strong>the</strong>n had <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> a Select School kept by Ebenezer<br />

Gray, at Scotland Green. His fa<strong>the</strong>r was a mechanic, and owned and operated<br />

a saw mill. At <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> sixteen he went to <strong>the</strong> Conn. Literary Institute<br />

at Suf&eld, Conn. ; entered Tr<strong>in</strong>ity College, and rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>re a year or more.<br />

Soon after leav<strong>in</strong>g College he commenced <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> law <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong><br />

Gov. Chauncey F. Cleveland, <strong>of</strong> Hampton; was admitted to <strong>the</strong> Bar <strong>in</strong> 1843.<br />

In 1844, was elected by <strong>the</strong> Democratic Party to <strong>the</strong> State Legislature, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g year, hav<strong>in</strong>g changed his residence to his native town, represented<br />

W<strong>in</strong>dham <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Legislature. He was Clerk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Senate <strong>in</strong> 1847.<br />

The same year removed to Danbury, Conn., and was appo<strong>in</strong>ted Judge <strong>of</strong><br />

Probate for that District. In 1849 he returned to Hampton, and <strong>in</strong> 1850<br />

was aga<strong>in</strong> elected by <strong>the</strong> Democratic Party to <strong>the</strong> Legislature. Five years<br />

later he was with J. K. Hawley, Gideon Welles and Gov. Cleveland organiz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> Republican Party <strong>in</strong> Hartford, Conn. He was a delegate from Conn,<br />

to <strong>the</strong> first National Repubhcan Convention at Philadelphia; was chosen
