Mr. John C. <strong>Olmsted</strong> lived <strong>in</strong> South Carol<strong>in</strong>a until he was fifteen years<br />

old, at which time, (it be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> close <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Civil War) his fa<strong>the</strong>r removed<br />

with his <strong>family</strong> to New York State. He studied Medic<strong>in</strong>e at <strong>the</strong> University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Virg<strong>in</strong>ia, and graduated from that Institution <strong>in</strong> 1876, afterwards pursu<strong>in</strong>g<br />

medical studies <strong>in</strong> New York City. At <strong>the</strong> conclusion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se studies, he was<br />

led by his strong Sou<strong>the</strong>rn sentiments and afiiliations to locate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> South,<br />

and commenced <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> his Pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>in</strong> Atlanta, Ga., <strong>in</strong> 1877, where<br />

he has rema<strong>in</strong>ed ever s<strong>in</strong>ce, practic<strong>in</strong>g his Pr<strong>of</strong>ession, as Physician and Surgeon,<br />

and as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Physiology <strong>in</strong> The Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Medical College, <strong>of</strong><br />

Atlanta, Ga. He served as a Volunteer Physician, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> great "Yellow-<br />

Fever " epidemic <strong>of</strong> 1878, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Chattanooga, Tenn.; had <strong>the</strong> fever,<br />

received a Gold Medal from <strong>the</strong> city, and <strong>in</strong> recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se services was,<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1879, elected a " permanent member " <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>America</strong>n Medical Association.<br />
