Mr. Edward <strong>Olmsted</strong> worked on a farm until 19 years <strong>of</strong> age; entered<br />

<strong>the</strong> Canandaigua Academy (New York State) <strong>in</strong> 1862, and taught school <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>ter; moved to California, arriv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re July 26, 1864. For two<br />

years was Secretary and Collector on <strong>the</strong> " Reed Turnpike " <strong>in</strong> Calaveras<br />

County. Had <strong>the</strong> honor <strong>of</strong> nam<strong>in</strong>g one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Big Trees " <strong>of</strong> that County<br />

after Gen. James Wadsworth, <strong>of</strong> Geneseo, N. Y.; sent to San Francisco to<br />

obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> marble tablet engraved with his name; <strong>in</strong> 1866, kept <strong>the</strong> Rock<br />

Creek Hotel <strong>in</strong> Stanislaus County; moved to Farm<strong>in</strong>gton, San Joaqu<strong>in</strong><br />

County, <strong>in</strong> 1872.<br />
