years <strong>in</strong> Ohio; removed to Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D. C, and became Super<strong>in</strong>tendent<br />

and Pay Clerk P. 0. Dept. and local Editor <strong>of</strong> Daily National Intelligencer;<br />

removed to Murphy, N. C, where he taught School for four years. Then<br />

became President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Presbyterian (Cumberland) High School, at London,<br />

Tenn. Removed to Jacksonville, Fla., <strong>in</strong> 1874 and was Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City<br />

School. Removed to Eufala, Fla., <strong>in</strong> 1879 and was President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Union<br />

Female College <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

He served <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civil War as Capt., Co. H., 4th Regt., Ohio Vols. Detailed<br />

by Gen. McCleUan to construct fortifications <strong>in</strong> West Virg<strong>in</strong>ia; was<br />

afterwards Chief <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eers on Staff <strong>of</strong> Gen. James Shields, <strong>the</strong>n Capt.<br />

Pioneer Corps under Gens. Banks and Pope. He was discharged on surgeons'<br />

certificate <strong>of</strong> disability <strong>in</strong> 1863.<br />
