I, James <strong>Olmsted</strong>, do acknowledge <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>of</strong> <strong>America</strong> to be<br />

Free, Independent, and Sovereign States, and declare that <strong>the</strong> People <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong><br />

owe no allegiance or obedience to George <strong>the</strong> Third, K<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Great Brita<strong>in</strong>;<br />

and I renounce, refuse, and abjure any allegiance or obedience to him; and<br />

I do swear, that I will, to <strong>the</strong> utmost <strong>of</strong> my power, support, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> and defend<br />

<strong>the</strong> said United States aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> said K<strong>in</strong>g George <strong>the</strong> Third, his heirs<br />

Mr. Timothy <strong>Olmsted</strong> marched to Boston with <strong>the</strong> E. Hartford company<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lex<strong>in</strong>gton Alarm, 1775. Served <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Revolutionary War as a musi--<br />

cian. Was a fifer <strong>in</strong> Co. E, 7th Conn. Regt., from May 5th to Dec. 7th, 1775,<br />

and also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> N<strong>in</strong>th Regt. <strong>in</strong> 1780. Enlisted May 1, 1777, <strong>in</strong> Col. Webb's<br />

regt., Capt. Whit<strong>in</strong>g's company, for three years. Was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> White<br />

Pla<strong>in</strong>s, N. Y. Served also <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> war <strong>of</strong> 1812, from Aug. 18th, to Oct. 28th,<br />

1814, <strong>in</strong> Capt. Erastus Strong's company at New London, Conn. He was a<br />

celebrated teacher and composer <strong>of</strong> sacred music.' In 1811 published <strong>the</strong><br />

"Musical Olio," composed <strong>of</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al and selected pieces. Moved to Hartland,<br />

Conn., <strong>in</strong> 1785, and <strong>the</strong>nce to Whitestown, N. Y.<br />
