FRIENDS OF MR. EDWARDS.<br />

Page 234. The follow<strong>in</strong>g list <strong>of</strong> names <strong>of</strong> persons who are supposed<br />

to have been friends <strong>of</strong> Rev. Jonathan Edwards was prepared by Rev.<br />

Solomon Clark, author <strong>of</strong> "Antiquities, Historicals and Graduates <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Northampton</strong>" —<br />

" Daniel Clark, born 1713, son <strong>of</strong> Increase, married, 1739, Experience<br />

Allen, daughter <strong>of</strong> Dea. Samuel, and sister <strong>of</strong> Joseph, both friends <strong>of</strong><br />

Mr. Edwards.<br />

"Simeon Clark, born 1720, son <strong>of</strong> Increase, married by Jonathan<br />

Edwards, Nov. 1749, to Rebecca, second child <strong>of</strong> Nathaniel Strong, a<br />

friend <strong>of</strong> Mr. Edwards. In 1750, Simeon Clark moved to Amherst<br />

chosen deacon there.<br />

" Increase Clark, father <strong>of</strong> Daniel and Simeon, married <strong>in</strong> 1710.<br />

" Capt. John Baker, one <strong>of</strong> the most <strong>in</strong>fluential men <strong>of</strong> Northamp-<br />

ton ; <strong>of</strong> an active, vigorous m<strong>in</strong>d, thoroughly religious. His wife,<br />

Rebecca Clark, was sister <strong>of</strong> Increase Clark, both married and built<br />

their dwell<strong>in</strong>gs the same year. Rebecca Clark was aunt <strong>of</strong> Daniel and<br />

Simeon. Capt. John Baker had a number <strong>of</strong> sons, all over six feet<br />

high, all averaged over 82, all pious men. The John Whittelsey house<br />

was built and occupied by Capt. John Baker. Daniel Clark lived above<br />

on the same side <strong>of</strong> the street. In 1739, it was the western most house<br />

<strong>in</strong> town. The Bakers and the Clarks on Elm St. kept up a family<br />

prayer meet<strong>in</strong>g for a great many years.<br />

"John Baker, Jr., son <strong>of</strong> Capt. John, born <strong>in</strong> 1712, married <strong>in</strong> 1741,<br />

his own cous<strong>in</strong>, Abigail Clark. Her father, Ebenezer, lived to be almost<br />

100, was one <strong>of</strong> the six sons <strong>of</strong> the first Dea. John, also a brother <strong>of</strong><br />

Increase. His house stood near the residence <strong>of</strong> Prest. Seelye.<br />

"Two sons <strong>of</strong> this Ebenezer Clark, viz. : — Ebenezer, Jr., married <strong>in</strong><br />

1740, and William, married <strong>in</strong> 1746, were also counted among the<br />

friends <strong>of</strong> Mr. Edwards. William lived opposite Capt. John Baker's,<br />

and Ebenezer, Jr. lived a little beyond, known now as the Jared Clark<br />

place. Mrs. John Baker, Jr., was a sister <strong>of</strong> the two brothers, Ebenezer,<br />

Jr., and William. The three were cous<strong>in</strong>s and near neighbors<br />

<strong>of</strong> Daniel Clark, who settled before them <strong>in</strong> that immediate vic<strong>in</strong>ity.<br />

Whose house stood for some years the farthest limit <strong>of</strong> civilization on<br />

Elm St. William Clark, and Daniel Clark, cous<strong>in</strong>s, w^ere neighbors 58<br />

years.<br />

" Capt. Roger Clap, not the commander <strong>of</strong> Castle William <strong>in</strong> Boston<br />

harbor, but his grandson, the same style <strong>of</strong> man, also much like his<br />

own father. Elder Preserved Clap, described as a good <strong>in</strong>strument and<br />

a great bless<strong>in</strong>g to the town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>. In the absence <strong>of</strong> direct<br />

evidence it would be safe to <strong>in</strong>sert on this list <strong>of</strong> Mr. Edwards' friends,<br />

the name <strong>of</strong> Capt. Roger Clap.<br />
