all, and no change was made. For some reason a special<br />

vote was passed, giv<strong>in</strong>g Joel Lyman permission to send his<br />

daughter to the girls" school.<br />

The Arrangement In November, 1793, it was not only voted to<br />

Cont<strong>in</strong>ued. make no alteration <strong>in</strong> regard to this matter,<br />

but the selectmen were " requested to see<br />

that the girls provide themselves with wood when at the<br />

masters school." At another meet<strong>in</strong>g the schoolmasters<br />

were directed to order scholars that go to the new schoolhouse,<br />

to br<strong>in</strong>g one quarter <strong>of</strong> a load <strong>of</strong> wood each, or Is.<br />

6d. <strong>in</strong> money to be used <strong>in</strong> the purchase <strong>of</strong> fuel.<br />

other Votes about From this time there is reason to believe<br />

School<strong>in</strong>g Girls. that glrls regularly attended the town<br />

schools, and the vote requir<strong>in</strong>g them to<br />

furnish wood <strong>in</strong>dicates that quite a number <strong>of</strong> them availed<br />

themselves <strong>of</strong> the opportunity. Still there was someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

not quite satisfactory, as there was a vote passed <strong>in</strong> 1793,<br />

authoriz<strong>in</strong>g the selectmen to let at auction the "southerly<br />

upper room <strong>in</strong> the new school house for the purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g girls." At a subsequent meet<strong>in</strong>g they were <strong>in</strong>-<br />

structed to postpone action on this matter for one quarter.<br />

This probably had reference to the '' proprietors school,"<br />

already noticed, and presumably noth<strong>in</strong>g more was done<br />

about it for several years, when that school was permitted<br />

to use a room <strong>in</strong> the school build<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Liek<strong>in</strong>gwater School- A slight difficulty occurred iu obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

House. a site for the new school-house at Liek<strong>in</strong>gwater.<br />

The old site was apparently<br />

too small, and the committee were <strong>in</strong>structed to buy addi-<br />

tional land if possible, or if that could not be done, to<br />

place the build<strong>in</strong>g partly <strong>in</strong> the highway. The result <strong>of</strong><br />

these <strong>in</strong>structions is not apparent, other than that a new<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g was erected.<br />

M<strong>in</strong>ister's Salary<br />

Owiug Undoubtedly to the hard times, Rev.<br />

]vjj.^ Williams, the m<strong>in</strong>ister, was <strong>in</strong> straight-<br />

ened circumstances, and he applied to the<br />

town for aid, <strong>in</strong> 1792. An article was <strong>in</strong>serted <strong>in</strong> the war-
