Adams. r^j^(,g Qf John Aclaius. It was a friendship<br />

tliat lasted through life. Adams was engaged<br />

ill a case at a session <strong>of</strong> the Court <strong>in</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield,<br />

which he conducted <strong>in</strong> a manner that attracted the atten-<br />

tion <strong>of</strong> Mr. Hawley. An <strong>in</strong>troduction followed, and the<br />

two men became <strong>in</strong>timate friends.<br />

As a Presid<strong>in</strong>g Major Hawley had the rare talent <strong>of</strong> con-<br />

men, especially <strong>in</strong> a promiscuous<br />

assembly. He was very frequently chosen<br />

moderator <strong>of</strong> town-meet<strong>in</strong>gs at home, and it is related <strong>of</strong><br />

him that while a member <strong>of</strong> the Legislature, a town-meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was held <strong>in</strong> Boston, which the moderator could not<br />

manage. Mr. Hawlej' was sent for, and succeeded <strong>in</strong> quell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the disorder. *<br />

A statesman. Gov. Hutcliiuson, <strong>in</strong> 1773, endeavored to<br />

conv<strong>in</strong>ce the Legislature and the people that<br />

Parliament had a right to make laws for America and to<br />

lay taxes. A committee was appo<strong>in</strong>ted by the House to<br />

answer this speech. Their report was the most elaborate<br />

state paper <strong>of</strong> the Revolutionary controversy <strong>in</strong> <strong>Massachusetts</strong>,<br />

and Hutch<strong>in</strong>son states that Mr. Hawley and Samuel<br />

Adams were the persons who had the greatest share <strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it, assisted by John Adams, who was not then a<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the Legislature, but was consulted by the committee<br />

at the <strong>in</strong>stance <strong>of</strong> Major Hawley. -<br />

Prom<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>in</strong> Counsel. Li the legislative Struggle relative to the<br />

Stamp Act, and other antagonisms grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out <strong>of</strong> it, Major Hawley was <strong>in</strong> the forefront <strong>of</strong> the<br />

battle. Whatever the legislation <strong>in</strong> it he was prom<strong>in</strong>ent,<br />

and his <strong>in</strong>fluence was everywhere acknowledged. He was<br />
