several encounters with the militia <strong>in</strong> which a number <strong>of</strong><br />

lives were lost, but noth<strong>in</strong>g occurred <strong>of</strong> equal importance<br />

with what had already taken place.<br />

Trouble <strong>in</strong> Berk- Gcn. Liucolu discharged a portion <strong>of</strong> his<br />

^^^^^- army after the retreat <strong>of</strong> Shays, but he still<br />

had work for the rema<strong>in</strong>der. On the 8"' <strong>of</strong><br />

February he was at <strong>Northampton</strong>, and the next day<br />

marched for Berkshire. Before the rebellion was crushed,<br />

the tei'ms <strong>of</strong> enlistment <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong> his troops expired.<br />

Recru<strong>its</strong> were enlisted for four months, and while the exchange<br />

was tak<strong>in</strong>g place, L<strong>in</strong>coln at one time had but<br />

thirty men with him.<br />

The Legislature On the 3*^ <strong>of</strong> February, the General Court<br />

Meets. assembled, four days after the time fixed<br />

upon. So great was the confusion <strong>of</strong> affairs<br />

throughout the State, that the members could not sooner<br />

reach Boston. A declaration <strong>of</strong> rebellion was made, the<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> clenjency by Gen. L<strong>in</strong>coln approved, all the meas-<br />

ures <strong>in</strong>augurated hj the Governor for the suppression <strong>of</strong><br />

the rebellion were sanctioned, and an appropriation <strong>of</strong><br />

£40,000 made to repay the money loaned by citizens, and to<br />

meet the other expenses <strong>of</strong> the war. Resolutions approv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the conduct <strong>of</strong> Gens. Shepherd and L<strong>in</strong>coln were<br />

passed, an order was made to raise fifteen hundred men for<br />

four months, and a reward <strong>of</strong> £150 <strong>of</strong>fered for the apprehension<br />

<strong>of</strong> the leaders <strong>of</strong> the outbreak.<br />

The War Cont<strong>in</strong>ued.<br />

Satisfied that it was no longer practicable<br />

to make head aga<strong>in</strong>st the concentrated<br />

army under Gen. L<strong>in</strong>coln, the <strong>in</strong>surgents <strong>in</strong>stituted a guerilla<br />

warfare, send<strong>in</strong>g ou.t small parties to surprise, harass<br />

and plunder the people. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the rema<strong>in</strong>der <strong>of</strong> the con-<br />

flict, hostilities were <strong>in</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong> conf<strong>in</strong>ed to the County <strong>of</strong><br />

Berkshire. Between one hundred fifty and two hundred<br />

<strong>of</strong> the disaffected under command <strong>of</strong> John Hubbard, gathered<br />

at West Stockbridge, but a number <strong>of</strong> volunteers were<br />

soon collected, and the party dispersed. Hubbard and a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> his men were captured.
