gents at once captured tlie abandoned Court-House, and<br />

after enjoy<strong>in</strong>g their triumph for a s<strong>in</strong>gle day, dispersed.<br />

Soon after the military were withdrawn.<br />

Mr. Judd's Account Jonathan Judd Jr. , <strong>of</strong> Southampton, was<br />

<strong>of</strong>theDemonstra- Que <strong>of</strong> the men wlio Volunteered at the call<br />

<strong>of</strong> the authorities to ojDpose the rioters,<br />

and at the risk <strong>of</strong> some slight repetition, the follow<strong>in</strong>g extracts<br />

<strong>from</strong> his diary are given : —<br />

•' Tuesday [Sept.] 26, 1786, 60 or 70 <strong>of</strong> the Militia set <strong>of</strong>f for Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield,<br />

very early to support the Government. About 8 I set out, some<br />

<strong>from</strong> Westhampton likewise got to Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield about 10. Militia at the<br />

Court House and the mob above Ferry. About 1 the Mob marched<br />

down <strong>in</strong> order and back : about 900 armed and unarmed. Government<br />

upwards <strong>of</strong> 1000. Court sit <strong>in</strong> the afternoon. A very sorrowful day.<br />

Brother aga<strong>in</strong>st Brother, Father aga<strong>in</strong>st Son. The Mob threaten the<br />

Lives <strong>of</strong> all that oppose them. Came away about sunset.<br />

"Wednesday, 27. Went with Dr. Woodbridge about 9. Got to<br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield by 12. L<strong>in</strong>es are drawn and Centuries kept by each Party.<br />

Looks more threaten<strong>in</strong>g than yesterday. Committees <strong>from</strong> each have<br />

met but cannot agree. Court did bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> tlie P. M. our situation<br />

is truly deplorable.<br />

" Thursday 28. Mob thi'eaten much biit they are not com<strong>in</strong>g. Those<br />

who threaten most do the least. The agreement nearly completed yesterday<br />

is f<strong>in</strong>ished. Militia march on to the Hill, the Mob march and<br />

countermarch thro the Town. Militia discharged about 3 P. M. Mob<br />

are high yet, not lowered tho [they have] lost their vim. I came away<br />

about 5 ; noth<strong>in</strong>g but fire and Smoke where the Mob are.<br />

" Fryday 29. Militia got home <strong>in</strong> afternoon."<br />

; but rest <strong>of</strong> the Night was<br />

other Volunteers. No record <strong>of</strong> the militia <strong>from</strong> this town who<br />

served on this occasion has been found.<br />

Undoubtedl}^ <strong>Northampton</strong> sent <strong>its</strong> quota, but the musterroll<br />

has not been preserved. People who went to Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield<br />

as lookers-on, organized themselves <strong>in</strong>to companies on<br />

the spot, received arms, and jo<strong>in</strong>ed the ranks <strong>of</strong> the militia,<br />

A muster-roll is extant which conta<strong>in</strong>s the names <strong>of</strong> eighty<br />

persons, who thus organized themselves after reach<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

scene <strong>of</strong> the disturbance. It bears this endorsement —<br />

:<br />

"The above gentlemen who were spectators <strong>in</strong> the Great Mob at<br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield, Sept. 28, 1786, at the Time when the Insurgents collected<br />

to Break up the Supreme Court, and made choice <strong>of</strong> Gen. Warham<br />

Parks as Capt., Ruggles Woodbridge, 1*^ Lieut., Col. Whitmore 2'^ do.,<br />

Lt. Seth Colten, Ensign, who chearfully accepted the command <strong>of</strong> the
