he sought the hand <strong>of</strong> Abigail Barnard <strong>of</strong> Deerfield. She<br />

decl<strong>in</strong>ed his <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> marriage, and he threatened to shoot<br />

himself, but f<strong>in</strong>ally <strong>in</strong>duced the girl to sign a marriage<br />

promise. AVhen it became known that Curson's wife was<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g, Samuel Barnard, father <strong>of</strong> Abigail, came to <strong>Northampton</strong><br />

and threatened to horsewhip Curson, but he escaped<br />

and went west.<br />

School-House used for<br />

a Private School.<br />

In 1794, Levi Shepherd and others, prob-<br />

.^jjiy the proprietors <strong>of</strong> tliis scliool, were<br />

granted the use <strong>of</strong> a room <strong>in</strong> the new<br />

school-house for a private school, under the direction <strong>of</strong> the<br />

selectmen. This may have been a cont<strong>in</strong>uation <strong>of</strong> the jjroprietor's<br />

school. How much longer it existed is not known.<br />

There is no further record concern<strong>in</strong>g the use <strong>of</strong> the schoolhouse<br />

for such a purpose.<br />

A Counterfeit Bill. lu 1785, the towu voted to reimburse Timothy<br />

Parsons the value <strong>of</strong> a £30 counterfeit<br />

bill, which he received for rates <strong>in</strong> 1779. The selectmen<br />

were to ascerta<strong>in</strong> the value <strong>of</strong> said bill by scale and order<br />

payment <strong>from</strong> the town treasurer. At that time the value<br />

<strong>of</strong> the bill was 13s. 5d. Whether it was orig<strong>in</strong>ally taken<br />

at <strong>its</strong> par value is unknown.<br />
