<strong>Northampton</strong>, with Asa Ludden <strong>of</strong> Williamsburg and Richard<br />

Sylvester <strong>of</strong> Chesterfield as Lieutenants. It was composed<br />

<strong>of</strong> men <strong>from</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>, Southampton, and Westhampton,<br />

and was mustered <strong>in</strong> at Westhampton. The<br />

company marched to Pittsfield <strong>in</strong> August, then to Albany,<br />

where they rema<strong>in</strong>ed two or three weeks, and thence to<br />

Saratoga. They were quartered <strong>in</strong> the barracks erected<br />

four years before. Several regiments were stationed there<br />

to prevent the British <strong>from</strong> send<strong>in</strong>g re<strong>in</strong>forcements <strong>from</strong><br />

Canada, while the campaign aga<strong>in</strong>st Cornwallis was <strong>in</strong> pro-<br />

gress. Barnabas Sears <strong>of</strong> Greenwich was the Colonel <strong>of</strong><br />

the regiment, and the detachment was under the command<br />

<strong>of</strong> Gen. Stark. When news came <strong>of</strong> the surrender <strong>of</strong><br />

Cornwallis, there was a general rejoic<strong>in</strong>g among the troops.<br />

The company was discharged <strong>in</strong> November. Amaziah<br />

Lucas and Jacob Pomeroy, both <strong>of</strong> Southampton, were<br />

members <strong>of</strong> this company, and <strong>from</strong> them Mr. Judd obta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

the above <strong>in</strong>formation. Their pr<strong>in</strong>cipal duty was<br />

scout<strong>in</strong>g, and they picked up many tories, fill<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Albany jails with them.<br />

The Last Requisition. Gov. Haucock iu September issued a call<br />

for a number <strong>of</strong> men equal to one quarter<br />

<strong>of</strong> the tra<strong>in</strong>-band companies. The totvn agreed to pay the<br />

men £3 per month specie, if they were called <strong>in</strong>to active<br />

service. Few if any enlisted under this requisition, and no<br />

record rema<strong>in</strong>s concern<strong>in</strong>g them.<br />

The Town hires In August the towu agreed to pay n<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Teamsters. teamsters for carry<strong>in</strong>g n<strong>in</strong>e loads <strong>of</strong> public<br />

stores <strong>from</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield to Great Barr<strong>in</strong>gton,<br />

a distance <strong>of</strong> fifty-five miles, at the rate <strong>of</strong> 2s. Gd. per mile.<br />

Clos<strong>in</strong>g Year <strong>of</strong> the<br />

With the cud <strong>of</strong> the sixth year <strong>of</strong> the war<br />

'^'^'- came <strong>its</strong> clos<strong>in</strong>g battles. Though hostili-<br />

ties did not immediately cease at the sur-<br />

render <strong>of</strong> Cornwallis, yet that event was the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

the end. But there was no relaxation <strong>of</strong> endeavor, and the<br />

country had still another year <strong>of</strong> sore labor and dire dis-<br />

tress before peace was f<strong>in</strong>ally established. The brilliant<br />

campaigns <strong>of</strong> Gen. Greene who, though defeated <strong>in</strong> two<br />

pitched battles, wrung <strong>from</strong> every disaster all the effects <strong>of</strong>
