might carry a load <strong>of</strong> wood to Mrs. Hooker's house, which<br />

shall be for the use <strong>of</strong> Mr. Williams and Mrs. Hooker's<br />

family." From this it appears that the new m<strong>in</strong>ister made<br />

his home with Mrs. Hooker. The follow<strong>in</strong>g year he mar-<br />

ried Mary Hooker, and they occupied the house dur<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

entire pastorate.<br />

Settlers for South- Elijah Pomeroy, Caleb Pomeroy, Widow<br />

ampton. Experience Bartlett, and Moses Bartlett,<br />

petitioned to be set <strong>of</strong>f to Southampton<br />

about this time. The committee to whom the matter was<br />

referred reported aga<strong>in</strong>st the change, but the town refused<br />

to accept the report, and voted to grant the prayer <strong>of</strong> the<br />

petitioners.<br />

Titus K<strong>in</strong>g desires to The vctcrau schoolmaster, Titus K<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Build a House. petitioned for "liberty to build a House<br />

upon the Town Land between the rear <strong>of</strong><br />

Asa Wright's Home lot and the bury<strong>in</strong>g yard fence." A<br />

committee reported <strong>in</strong> favor <strong>of</strong> grant<strong>in</strong>g the request, but<br />

the town refused.<br />

Various Appropria- The usual allowauces were made for school-<br />

*^°°^- <strong>in</strong>g at Clapp's Farms, Easthampton, and<br />

for highways <strong>in</strong> Westhampton, previous to<br />

<strong>its</strong> <strong>in</strong>corporation. The bounty for wolves was raised to<br />

£16. A committee had been appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> previous years <strong>in</strong><br />

accordance with an act <strong>of</strong> the General Court, to provide<br />

for the families <strong>of</strong> Cont<strong>in</strong>ental soldiers, and this year the<br />

sum <strong>of</strong> £588 was expended for that purpose. In November,<br />

the town voted that the prices for labor and materials<br />

should be six times higher than usual. Cont<strong>in</strong>ental money<br />

at this time was at the rate <strong>of</strong> six to one.
