12"' <strong>of</strong> June another requisition was made for eighteen<br />

hundred men for service <strong>in</strong> Rhode Island. But their dest<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

was changed and <strong>of</strong> the one hundred n<strong>in</strong>ety-n<strong>in</strong>e<br />

men required <strong>of</strong> Hampshire, one hundred <strong>from</strong> the southern<br />

part <strong>of</strong> the county were to go to Providence, and<br />

n<strong>in</strong>ety-n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>from</strong> the northern portion were to march to<br />

Albany. It was probably <strong>in</strong> answer to this requisition that<br />

a company <strong>from</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong> and vic<strong>in</strong>ity under Capt.<br />

Daniel Pomeroy went to Albany. Their names have not<br />

been discovered, but they jo<strong>in</strong>ed the division under Gen.<br />

Stark. In May the selectmen paid the town treasurer £153,<br />

part <strong>of</strong> the bounty money raised under the tax <strong>of</strong> $1300.<br />

Of this sum, £90 was paid to Daniel Pomeroy.<br />

Requisitions f o r Accompauyiug these calls for soldiers were<br />

Cloth<strong>in</strong>g. similar orders for cloth<strong>in</strong>g. In March, an<br />

order was issued for collect<strong>in</strong>g shirts, shoes,<br />

and stock<strong>in</strong>gs, equal <strong>in</strong> number to one seventh <strong>of</strong> all males<br />

above sixteen years <strong>of</strong> age. If they were not contributed,<br />

the selectmen were to purchase them. This was followed<br />

by another requisition <strong>in</strong> June for the same quantity, the<br />

proportion for this town be<strong>in</strong>g sixty-four <strong>of</strong> each article<br />

already named. Returns were to be made to the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong><br />

the Secretary <strong>of</strong> State before September 20"'. In the gen-<br />

eral list <strong>of</strong> town debts, rendered at the March meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

1779, the sum <strong>of</strong> £303.15 was charged to the cloth<strong>in</strong>g ac-<br />

count.<br />

Companies under The uames <strong>of</strong> but two men enlisted by<br />

this Call. Capt. Cook, uudcr the resolve <strong>of</strong> April,<br />

have been found: — Ithamar Strong and<br />

Oliver Sprague. In November, 1778, a company <strong>from</strong> this<br />

section under command <strong>of</strong> Capt. Fairfield <strong>of</strong> Williamsburg<br />

went to Dorchester, where they were employed <strong>in</strong><br />

fortify<strong>in</strong>g the heights. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the service, which ended<br />

<strong>in</strong> January, 1779, the company went to New London and<br />

back. In it were several men <strong>from</strong> Southampton. Another<br />

company, commanded by Capt. Montague <strong>of</strong> South Hadley,<br />

was stationed at Albany. The regiment was commanded<br />

by Capt. Chap<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hatfield, and the term <strong>of</strong> service<br />

was six weeks. Still another company was recruited
