afterwards to White Pla<strong>in</strong>s. They came home <strong>in</strong> the latter<br />

part <strong>of</strong> November. Thirteen men <strong>from</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong> were<br />

members <strong>of</strong> this company.<br />

Losses by North- Thomas Clark, Solomon Wright, Thomas<br />

ampton Men. Smith, Silas Bartlett, Isaac Clark, Solomon<br />

Dewey, and Eleazar Root lost their knapsacks,<br />

blankets and cloth<strong>in</strong>g at Saratoga. The company<br />

was obliged to retreat hurriedly, when almost surrounded<br />

by the enemy. Each man made a claim upon the town or<br />

state for his loss, amount<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the aggregate to between<br />

£30 and £40, but the claim seems not to have been allowed.<br />

Transport<strong>in</strong>g Stores Epliraiui Wright <strong>of</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong> was ento<br />

the Army. gaged as a teamster, or as he was called <strong>in</strong><br />

the documents <strong>of</strong> that date, " waggon mas-<br />

ter," throughout the Revolution, and transported large<br />

quantities <strong>of</strong> stores to the army. One <strong>of</strong> his earliest accounts<br />

is dated June, 1777. He received at that time <strong>from</strong><br />

Robert Breck Esq. , a member <strong>of</strong> the State Committee on<br />

Supplies, who was also commissary for Hampshire County,<br />

" 12 hogsd & 9 Tier. Rum, 2 hogds Mollasses, three hgds<br />

Sugar, 2 hgds & one Tier. C<strong>of</strong>fee, 7 barrels <strong>of</strong> G<strong>in</strong>ger, one<br />

Tier. Pepper, 31 boxes Chocolate <strong>of</strong> 50 lbs. each, & one box<br />

chocolate <strong>of</strong> 250 lbs.. Two Tierces <strong>of</strong> Oatmeal, four tierces<br />

<strong>of</strong> Indian Meal," which the department conveyed to Fort<br />

George. These stores were <strong>in</strong>tended for the army at Ticonderoga,<br />

but for want <strong>of</strong> boats, only a portion went to the<br />

army, the rest rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at the Cont<strong>in</strong>ental storehouse at<br />

Fort George. Mr. Wright was evidently at the head <strong>of</strong><br />

the transportation department <strong>in</strong> Western <strong>Massachusetts</strong>,<br />

and the teamsters received their pay <strong>of</strong> him. In another<br />

document may be found a description <strong>of</strong> several loads carried<br />

<strong>in</strong> July, 1777, "<strong>from</strong> New Providence towards the<br />

northern army, be<strong>in</strong>g 69 miles & four shill<strong>in</strong>gs per Tun per<br />

mile." Among the articles transported by them were ten<br />

seven<br />

tierces, casks and barrels <strong>of</strong> rum, brandy, and w<strong>in</strong>e ;<br />

tierces, casks and boxes <strong>of</strong> chocolate ; two tierces <strong>of</strong> rice ;<br />

one hhd. and one box <strong>of</strong> " cloath<strong>in</strong>g ; " six tierces <strong>of</strong> salt<br />

a cask <strong>of</strong> mustard ; a hhd. or two <strong>of</strong> molasses, etc. From<br />
