CHAPTER XXVII.<br />

^REVOLUTION—DEATH OF GEN. POMEROY.<br />

FREQUENT requisitions for men were made<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1776. Most <strong>of</strong> them were required for<br />

short terms, and generally for a specified purpose. None<br />

seem to have been enlisted for more than one year, and<br />

most <strong>of</strong> them for two, three and six months. On the 9^^<br />

<strong>of</strong> April, eight companies were ordered to secure the town<br />

and harbor <strong>of</strong> Boston, <strong>of</strong> which one company was enlisted<br />

<strong>in</strong> Hampshire County. It is believed that no one <strong>from</strong><br />

<strong>Northampton</strong> was enrolled <strong>in</strong> that company. On the<br />

<strong>of</strong> June, another call was made, and five thousand men<br />

were wanted <strong>from</strong> six counties, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Hampshire, to<br />

re<strong>in</strong>force the army <strong>in</strong> Canada. <strong>Northampton</strong>'s quota was<br />

forty-seven. Aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> July another order was issued for<br />

enlist<strong>in</strong>g every twenty-fifth man to re<strong>in</strong>force the northern<br />

armies ; that is, one man <strong>in</strong> twenty-five <strong>of</strong> the numbers<br />

compos<strong>in</strong>g the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and alarm lists. They were to<br />

serve till December 1^', and were to receive 18s. each for<br />

blankets and use <strong>of</strong> arms, one month's advanced pay. Id.<br />

per mile <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> rations on the march, and one day's pay<br />

for every twenty miles traveled between home and the<br />

place <strong>of</strong> general rendezvous. A forfeit or f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> £10, to<br />

be paid with<strong>in</strong> twenty-four hours, was levied for every man<br />

drawn, who refused to serve.<br />

Soldiers for Canada. Under thcsc calls the Committee <strong>of</strong> Safety<br />

for Hampshire County, consist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Joseph<br />

Hawley <strong>of</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>, Noah Goodman <strong>of</strong> Hadley,<br />

Major William Pynchon <strong>of</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield, David Moseley <strong>of</strong><br />

Westfield, and Capt. Israel Hubbard <strong>of</strong> Hatfield, raised a<br />

regiment <strong>in</strong> this county. The soldiers for Canada were to<br />
