Langford's gun,^ and wounded Lutlier Pomeroy. In the<br />

even<strong>in</strong>g many shells and st<strong>in</strong>k pots were fired, but the<br />

flames were speedily ext<strong>in</strong>guished. One ball lodged <strong>in</strong> the<br />

plate <strong>of</strong> the Roxbury meet<strong>in</strong>g-house. After the battle, the<br />

regiment removed to the other side <strong>of</strong> the meet<strong>in</strong>g-house,<br />

and pitched their tents <strong>in</strong> an orchard. Gen. Wash<strong>in</strong>gton's<br />

headquarters were not far <strong>of</strong>f. In a few weeks the regiment<br />

marched to Dorchester, and were billeted <strong>in</strong> the<br />

houses <strong>of</strong> the settlers. Parades were held near the bury<strong>in</strong>gground.<br />

Adjutant. The companies were commanded by Capt. K<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> Great Barr<strong>in</strong>gton, Capt. Moses Soule <strong>of</strong> New Marlboro<br />

(Berkshire), Capt. Allen <strong>of</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>, Capt. Abner<br />

Pomeroy <strong>of</strong> Southampton, Capt. Webber <strong>of</strong> Worth<strong>in</strong>gton,<br />

Capt. Webster <strong>of</strong> Chesterfield, Capt. Israel Chap<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hatfield,<br />

and others. The soldiers <strong>from</strong> the east side <strong>of</strong> Connecticut<br />

River were <strong>in</strong> another regiment. A guard was<br />

sent to Dorchester Po<strong>in</strong>t every night. Capt. Abner Pomeroy's<br />

company was stationed at what is now Commercial<br />

Po<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

The Company Re- Most <strong>of</strong> the compauy <strong>of</strong> miuute-meu whose<br />

^^^^- proceed<strong>in</strong>gs have thus been detailed, came<br />

home about the first <strong>of</strong> January, 1776.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> them enlisted for another year. Capt. Jonathan<br />

Allen returned sixty-five men <strong>in</strong> his company at Dorchester,<br />

Sept. 5, 1775. Noah Cook came home <strong>from</strong> Dorchester<br />

about the middle <strong>of</strong> January, hav<strong>in</strong>g rema<strong>in</strong>ed two weeks<br />

over eight months, as did many others.<br />

The uext important event was the capture<br />

Ticonderoga and<br />

Crown Po<strong>in</strong>t. <strong>of</strong> Forts Ticouderoga and Crown Po<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

This did much to k<strong>in</strong>dle the enthusiasm <strong>of</strong><br />

the people throughout the country, furnished greatly<br />
