been "warned out <strong>of</strong> town'" at different times, but here<br />

was a vote sever<strong>in</strong>g their connection with the parish, <strong>in</strong><br />

spite <strong>of</strong> any claim they might have upon the church.<br />

Paupers were given to understand that even though they<br />

might be church-members <strong>in</strong> good and regular stand<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

they were not to be encouraged. Not less than twenty<br />

persons were "warned out <strong>of</strong> town'* <strong>in</strong> 1741 and 1742, and<br />

for several succeed<strong>in</strong>g years the number was scarcely less.<br />

With this provision <strong>of</strong> the law, thoroughly enforced, it is<br />

not probable that <strong>Northampton</strong> was burdened to any great<br />

extent with the paupers <strong>of</strong> other towns.<br />

Duriug this year the town was <strong>in</strong>dicted for<br />

Timothy Dwight were appo<strong>in</strong>ted to defend<br />

the suit. One <strong>in</strong>dictment was found by the Grand Jury <strong>in</strong><br />

August, and another presentment was made at the November<br />

term <strong>of</strong> the Court <strong>of</strong> General Sessions <strong>of</strong> the Peace.<br />

The cases Avent aga<strong>in</strong>st the town, and f<strong>in</strong>es to the amount<br />

<strong>of</strong> £9.9 were paid.<br />

Wolves.<br />

These animals were becom<strong>in</strong>g very numerous<br />

and destructive, and a bountj^ <strong>of</strong> £3 for<br />

all hunted down and 40s. for all caught <strong>in</strong> traps, was<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered, <strong>in</strong> addition to the bounty paid by the Prov<strong>in</strong>ce,<br />

provided the animals were killed before the first <strong>of</strong> June.<br />

Pascommuck School- Whcu tlic towu denied the petition <strong>of</strong> the<br />

House. Pascommuck settlers, <strong>in</strong> 1771, to build them<br />

a school-house, they erected one at their<br />

own expense the follow<strong>in</strong>g year, and the next year petitioned<br />

the town for an appropriation towards <strong>its</strong> payment.<br />

This request was granted, and the town paid one half the<br />

cost amount<strong>in</strong>g to £7.1.9, <strong>in</strong> 1775.<br />

for Itself. pendent upon the parent town, and dis-<br />

gusted with the treatment <strong>its</strong> requests for<br />

school and m<strong>in</strong>isterial privileges had received, sought j^ermission<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1773, to set up for <strong>its</strong>elf. After a favorable report<br />

<strong>from</strong> a special committee, the town voted to make no<br />

opposition to the petitioners, and granted them £300
