then laid regular siege to the place, but before anyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

decisive occurred, an English fleet arrived, and the besiegers<br />

speedily withdrew.<br />

Soldiers for Canada.<br />

For the " total roductiou <strong>of</strong> Canada " many<br />

men enlisted <strong>in</strong> Hampshire County and<br />

some were impressed, but it is not certa<strong>in</strong> that any <strong>of</strong> them<br />

participated <strong>in</strong> the clos<strong>in</strong>g scenes <strong>of</strong> the war. Fewer<br />

names than usual <strong>from</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong> are found upon the<br />

muster-rolls for 1760. They were undoubtedly employed<br />

<strong>in</strong> garrison duty. Col. Seth Pomeroy had command <strong>of</strong> the<br />

frontier forts <strong>from</strong> April IG"' to June 30'''. He had fifty-<br />

six men under him, and they were distributed at Colra<strong>in</strong>,<br />

Charlemont, West Hoosack, and Fort <strong>Massachusetts</strong>. Several<br />

companies <strong>from</strong> this county were <strong>in</strong> service dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

year. Those who enlisted for the " total reduction <strong>of</strong> Can-<br />

ada '' received $10 each <strong>in</strong> cash, and £6 <strong>in</strong> Treasury notes<br />

those who recruited them were paid 3s. for each man. ^<br />

Peace Declared. While the couqucst <strong>of</strong> Canada completed<br />

by the surrender <strong>of</strong> Montreal virtually<br />

ended the war, peace was not declared till 1763. No further<br />

fight<strong>in</strong>g occurred, though there were several companies<br />

<strong>from</strong> Hampshire County <strong>in</strong> the service on the frontiers<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the years 1761 and 1763. Few names <strong>from</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong><br />

are found upon the muster-rolls.<br />
