Dupuis " as written by himself, "but <strong>in</strong>scril)ed on tlie town<br />

books as " Sylv<strong>in</strong>e Dupee," was the name. The family<br />

was composed <strong>of</strong> n<strong>in</strong>e persons :<br />

the man, wife and seven<br />

children. He was employed by different people, who paid<br />

him <strong>in</strong> cloth<strong>in</strong>g and provisions. From the town he received<br />

4s. per week and the nse <strong>of</strong> a house. These payments<br />

seem to have cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>from</strong> 1760 to 17(i5, after<br />

which date no further record concern<strong>in</strong>g him has been<br />

ley—before his failure <strong>in</strong> the Niagara expedition<br />

was known <strong>in</strong> England— planned, <strong>in</strong> connection with<br />

the colonial Governors, a campaign for the follow<strong>in</strong>g year<br />

so comprehensive as to be beyond the capacity <strong>of</strong> the colonies<br />

to undertake. It <strong>in</strong>volved the employment <strong>of</strong> upwards<br />

<strong>of</strong> twenty thousand men upon the same l<strong>in</strong>es as that<br />

<strong>of</strong> the previous year. But <strong>Massachusetts</strong> refused to do<br />

more than enlist three thousand five hundred men for<br />

another movement aga<strong>in</strong>st Crown Po<strong>in</strong>t, and Gen. W<strong>in</strong>slow<br />

was recalled <strong>from</strong> Nova Scotia to take the command.<br />

War Declared and In May, 1756, England formally declared<br />

New Commanders ^ar agalust Fraucc, and the Earl <strong>of</strong> Lou-<br />

don was appo<strong>in</strong>ted commander-<strong>in</strong>-chief <strong>in</strong><br />

America, Gov. Shirley was superceded <strong>in</strong> June bj^ Col.<br />

Webb, who was to serve till either the newly appo<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

commander-<strong>in</strong>-chief or Gen. Abercrombie arrived. Some<br />

time elapsed before Loudon left England, and the command<br />

devolved on Gen. Abercrombie. He did noth<strong>in</strong>g, however,<br />

but await the arrival <strong>of</strong> his superior <strong>of</strong>ficer, who did not<br />

reach lieadquarters at Albany till the last <strong>of</strong> July.<br />

French forces. He led an army <strong>of</strong> five<br />

thousand men <strong>in</strong> August aga<strong>in</strong>st Oswego, which was garrisoned<br />

by fourteen hundred soldiers under Col. Mercer.<br />

The death <strong>of</strong> the commander, together with the exhaustion<br />
