Friday, 22. T<strong>in</strong>s a fair day. A council sat at 3 <strong>of</strong> the<br />

clock <strong>in</strong> tlie afternoon to consider some th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> impor-<br />

tance.<br />

Saturday, 23. The Council that sat yesterday adjourned<br />

over to 9 <strong>of</strong> the clock this day, and voted to send to the<br />

several Governments for a re<strong>in</strong>forcement, hav<strong>in</strong>g news<br />

<strong>from</strong> 4 Indians who came <strong>from</strong> Canada that they had made<br />

a party much superior to our own. This a fair hot day.<br />

Sabbath day, 24"\ Sent a letter by Major Foot to my<br />

son Seth at New Haven. Sent my 7"' to my wife by a<br />

scout across to Fort <strong>Massachusetts</strong>, and one to Major Hawley<br />

and to Elisha Pomeroy. A thunder shower today.<br />

Mr. Williams fore and afternoon.<br />

Monday, 25. A fair day ; this day the express went <strong>of</strong>f<br />

that was to have gone yesterday.<br />

Tuesday, 26. Orders given to march with about 2000<br />

men, and a number <strong>of</strong> waggons to carry cannon and stores.<br />

We set <strong>of</strong>f about 4 <strong>of</strong> the clock <strong>in</strong> the afternoon, 6 or 8<br />

cannon fired at our departure. We proceeded a little above<br />

the falls which were about four miles There encamped<br />

with our army under hemlock and bush shelters.<br />

Wednesday, 27"'. A fair morn<strong>in</strong>g. We set out with<br />

our army i an hour after 7 o'clock <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g went on<br />

about 4 or 5 miles then stopped, eat pieces <strong>of</strong> ham broken<br />

bread and cheese, drank some fresh lemon punch and the<br />

best <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e with General Johnson and some <strong>of</strong> the field<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers, we staid about an hour and then marched on slow<br />

for the road was not clear, but a large number <strong>of</strong> hands<br />

clear<strong>in</strong>g before the army.<br />

Thursday, 28. Our army encamped at a good brook<br />

about half way <strong>from</strong> the carry<strong>in</strong>g place to the lake ; a<br />

small party <strong>of</strong> Indians went <strong>of</strong>f to hunt a little above last<br />

night ; they killed and brought <strong>in</strong> 3 deer ; they gave me a<br />

thigh <strong>of</strong> one on which I supped and breakfasted next morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with a good ajipetite. Set out about 8 <strong>of</strong> the clock<br />

with our army hav<strong>in</strong>g early sent about 400 men to cut our<br />

about noon stopped and d<strong>in</strong>ed with General Johnson<br />

way ;<br />

by a small brook under a tree ;<br />

eat a good d<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>of</strong> cold<br />

boiled and roast venison, drank good fresh lemon punch<br />

and w<strong>in</strong>e, we came to the Lake about 4 <strong>of</strong> the clock.<br />

Friday, 29"'. A fair cold day, strong w<strong>in</strong>d at north.
